@courtney my two cents: Laurie's Planet of Sound, Pinwheel, Dusty Groove, 808

If you're walking from Dusty to the W.P. Reckless, you'll go right past Shuga Records with their big neon joint sign ("Highly Recommended"), it's not my favorite shop but since you'll be passing by you might as well pop in.

Handy Haversack:

Got the very last of those Polish cassettes!

ChukAmok: Fantastic. They were so fucking on. Intense, fiery, fun, *long* set to a super-enthusiastic crowd. Maybe quite a lot of snow on the hills in the audience, but there were definitely some younger people out there.

On a personal level, for me, it was really powerful to see them again. They were one of those formative bands in HS I saw a ton (bless you, Atlanta, for all-ages shows, if nothing else). Lots of life lived since then, so I was really feeling the connections. And it turned out the opening band had musical and friendship connections, so I actually got to meet Doug from the Connells afterward and thank him for the music and all he's done for me, which I love LOVE to be able to do with musicians who have really meant something to me for a long time. It was a very emotional night, really good for me after a rough start to the evening.

The hard part of this Bandcamp/Epic news is that it makes no sense. My main fear is that they are going to transform it into some sort of "creators platform" in an attempt to take Apple and Google down, and when they fail, Bandcamp (or what's left of it) will be dismantled.

It's funny, I've been on Bandcamp for 6 years. Just tried out Soundcloud a few weeks ago. Not even in the same ballpark. The Free Music Archive - created by WFMU - is a possible alternative, but I just started publishing there. Too soon to tell. also looking at Jamendo...

Rev. Turnip Druid:

soundcloud filled a different need. Seemed like artists were using it to showcase more sketchbook stuff, works in progress. Before long, people were uploading every little burp & fart they recorded and it started to feel very disposable.

...whereas bandcamp was more for finished, album-type content. Seemed to encourage more discipline, which is nice.

Dave -- and see note from Ken that you can e-mail him directly (ken at wfmu.org) to update your info in the system.

Ha! ...even the basement band I was in has its one pass demos on band camp - guess we missed that memo, RTD...
Just let the bean counters & lawyers choose your Music, Art & Culture
...here is your McDonalds menu, virtual mall citizens ...it's what's for breakfast, lunch & dinner ...& statistics show you'll like it real good (numbers don't lie)...

@ RTD - Been to your Bandcamp page before, but now I might look a little closer and see if there is anything else I want.

During tape-trading days, internet wasn't a glimmer in anyone's eye. Nowadays, postage rates have gone insane, so a return to 1980s methods might not be feasible either. Shrug!

Cheers, sphere!

I'm going to start preparing for a Bandcamp exit from a user perspective. I'll make sure everything is downloaded.

Yeah, sphere. Same. It'll just suck is all. Should never have trusted a holiday other than Marathon (and associated Hellraiser and SWAGVENT). Clearly, Bandcamp Friday was gonna pull a Santa Claus eventually. (That is, be an invention of Coca-Cola used only to commodify freedom as consumption.)

Bandcamp Friday will ALWAYS be way better than Record Store Day. I don't know why I compare the two, but there's my two cents.
