Love 30   Favoriting

La Folie (Expanded version)

EMI

1981

B-Side from arguably The Stranglers' most famous single "Golden Brown". This is more about the type of "love" you find when scoring a Tennis match. It features the sounds of, well, tennis; as accompanied by backmasked instruments.

0:03:19 (Pop-up)
Joy Division  No Love Lost   Favoriting An Ideal for Living  Enigma Records  1978  All tracks were recorded at Pennine Sound Studios in Oldham on 14 December 1977. The recording sessions were self-financed by the band, on a budget of £400.[ The release reflects the band's early punk influences, as opposed to the post-punk style they later developed. In an interview with Uncut magazine in 2001, drummer Stephen Morris stated that when making the EP, the band requested the engineer make the drums sound like "Speed of Life", the opening track on David Bowie's 1977 album Low. "Strangely enough he couldn't". Probably because he wasn't Tony Visconti....  0:07:27 (Pop-up)
Fad Gaget  Love Parasite   Favoriting Under The Flag  Mute  1982  Written by Frank Tovey for the most part concerning his fear for the future of the world, in light of having just become a father. He was apparently afraid of the world his daughter was going to grow up in. Sampling, which was new technology back in the early 1980s is incorporated into the album and sequencing is also heavily used. It features backing vocals by fellow Mute Records artist Alison Moyet.  0:11:07 (Pop-up)
The Futureheads  Hounds Of Love (New Mix)   Favoriting The Futureheads  679,679  2004  An excellent, excellent Kate Bush cover, Hounds of Love . ['Hounds Of Love'] is really about someone who is afraid of being caught by the hounds that are chasing him. I wonder if everyone is perhaps ruled by fear, and afraid of getting into relationships on some level or another. They can involve pain, confusion and responsibilities, and I think a lot of people are particularly scared of responsibility. Maybe the being involved isn't as horrific as your imagination can build it up to being - perhaps these baying hounds are really friendly. (Kate Bush Club newsletter, 1985)  0:14:22 (Pop-up)
The Precisions  If This Is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)   Favoriting If This Is Love (I'd Rather Be Lonely)7"  Drew /Sidra  1967  This energetic group from Detroit has a recording career that spreads over at least nine different labels. Beset by personnel changes, the Precisions dropped singles on Strand, Golden Crest, Wild, Highland, and Debra Records from 1960 to 1963. This tune is an absolute banger in Northern Soul circles,,,and shall henceforth be labelled as a choooooooooooon  0:17:28 (Pop-up)
Betty Davis  Anti Love Song   Favoriting Betty Davis  Light In The Attic  1973  Wrote her first song at the age of twelve. recorded some of the dankest, dirtiest funk out there. Put up with Miles Davis' shit and made him cool again. Feminist icon. She has left us this week.  0:20:12 (Pop-up)
Delroy Wilson  Got to Get Away From You   Favoriting Moonstompers, Shufflers And Skankers... Ska  Metro Select  2012  Wilson is often regarded as Jamaica's first child star, having first found success as a teenager. The singer continued recording sporadically during the early '90s, having fallen into a coma shortly before his death, due to problems associated with alcohol abuse, he died March 6, 1995 in Jamaica at age 46 of complications from cirrhosis of the liver.  0:24:45 (Pop-up)

Silly Love Songs (karaoke)   Favoriting

Instrumental Hits of Paul McCartney

Tam-Tam Media

2009

But over the years people have said, "Aw, he sings love songs, he writes love songs, he's so soppy at times." I thought, Well, I know what they mean, but, people have been doing love songs forever. I like 'em, other people like 'em, and there's a lot of people I love -- I'm lucky enough to have that in my life. So the idea was that "you" may call them silly, but what's wrong with that? The song was, in a way, to answer people who just accuse me of being soppy. The nice payoff now is that a lot of the people I meet who are at the age where they've just got a couple of kids and have grown up a bit, settling down, they'll say to me, "I thought you were really soppy for years, but I get it now! I see what you were doing!" By the way, "Silly Love Songs" also had a good bass line and worked well live.

Surrender To The Night

Thrill Jockey

1997

"a blend of Wire-esque jaggedness, arena-rock machismo, and the occasional dance-friendly beat." Babs: I still think Futureworld was their best record.

0:32:49 (Pop-up)
Dog Faced Hermans  Love Is The Heart Of Everything   Favoriting Hum of Life  Konkurrel / Project A Bomb  1993  Speaking of love, I love this band so much... They migrated from Scotland to The Netherlands and crossed paths many times with The Ex, eventually sharing member Andy Moor, who is still with The Ex to this day. As for this song, the liner notes point out: "Title is Mayakovsky's - letters to Lili Brik."  0:34:50 (Pop-up)

Congo Norvell  Love   Favoriting Music To Remember Him By  Basura!/Priority  1994  "Congo Norvell was a band led by Kid Congo Powers (Cramps, Gun Club, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Kid Congo Powers & the Pink Monkey Birds) and Sally Norvell (Prohibition & the Norvells). Congo Norvell formed in 1990 after Powers and Norvell met at the deathbed of a friend in Los Angeles. They embarked on a series of gigs meant to benefit friends dying of AIDS, and were noticed and signed to a record deal. They went on to record 3 studio albums (Music to Remember Him By, The Dope, the Lies, the Vaseline, & Abnormals Anonymous) and multiple EPs and compilations. After having been based in LA for a few years, they relocated to New York City in 1994 and played the NYC & East Coast circuit frequently. They toured Europe and the North America, often opening for Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds."  0:45:42 (Pop-up)
Public Image LTD  Fodderstompf   Favoriting Public Image  Virgin / Light In The Attic  1978  My cousin and her husband loved this song so much that they danced to it on their wedding day. One of PiL's (many) shining moments. As the lyrics themselves state: "We only wanted to finish the album with the minimum amount of effort Which we are now doing very suc-cess-fully"  0:49:50 (Pop-up)

Metal Box Rebuilt In Dub

Cleopatra

2021

Original Public Image LTD bassist Jah Wobble recently re-imagined the second PiL album in Dub. This track, however is from PiL's first album from 1978, therefore this is considered to be an extra track. Find the entire album here: Metal Box Rebuilt In Dub Bandcamp

King Tuff  I Love You Ugly   Favoriting Black Moon Spell  Sub Pop Records  2014  Kyle Thomas aka King Tuff has been releasing material on Sub Pop and Burger Records since 2006. Also played in Ty Segall's backing band "The Muggers", formed following the release of Emotional Mugger. this tune sums up true love in just over a minute.  1:05:39 (Pop-up)
The Vaccines/Wllliam Onyeabor  Do You Want A Man   Favoriting What?! William Onyeabor Remixed  Luaka Bop  2014  He studied cinematography in Russia (USSR) for many years, returning to Nigeria in the mid-1970's to start his own Wilfilms Records music label and to set up a music and film production studio, Wilfilms (Recording Studios) Ltd. Enugu, Nigeria. This remix/rework record is very good and highly recommended!  1:06:30 (Pop-up)
Primal Scream  The Glory of Love   Favoriting Beautiful Future  B-Unique  2008  This album is criminally underrated and often overlooked! To taste the sweetness of love one must first feel its bitter sting...totes worth it!  1:08:54 (Pop-up)
Au Pairs  Love Song   Favoriting Playing With a Different Sex  Human  1981  The Au Pairs were a British post-punk band that formed in Birmingham in 1978 and continued until 1983. They produced two studio albums and three singles. Their songs were said to have "contempt for the cliches of contemporary sexual politics", This tune belies that tuff exterior because this is the schmoopiest song in the set IMHO...  1:12:02 (Pop-up)
Add N To (X)  Sheez Mine   Favoriting Loud Like Nature  Mute Records  2002  Love as possession. A highlight tune on this perfect album. Its intensity proved too much for Shenton, who left the band after this tour.  1:14:58 (Pop-up)
Scream Club  Fine As Fuck   Favoriting Life Of A Heartbreaker  Crunks Not Dead  2006  "2 wierd girls who met, fell in love in Olympia, and started a band. They broke up, stayed best frien" One of the more fun and catchy of the hardcore feminist electroclash crews, Scream Club hail from Olympia, WA and featured a number of collaborators. I saw them live and it was rather joyful and extremely fun.  1:18:49 (Pop-up)

Street Bass Anthems

Seclusiasis

2008

Dev7Nine aka Dev79 is a Philadelphia based producer/DJ, who has been banging it out as an OG of the bass music underground. He effortlessly weaves elements of grime, garage, rap, and juke, among a plethora of other styles into a tapestry of urban music that he (along with lablemate Starkey) have dubbed “Street Bass.

1:26:13 (Pop-up)
Magazine  I Love You, You Big Dummy   Favoriting Scree - Rarities 1978-1981  Virgin  1978  Howard Devoto was the lead singer of Magazine (after he left Buzzcocks.) A Captain Beefheart cover, which had been released as a B-side to "Give Me Everything" in 1978. I love this cover dearly, from the outset "We are on..." vocal, to all the staccato guitar vamps, keyboard squiggles, saxophone squawks and so forth. Barry Adamson holds down the bluesy origins of the song on bass, but in a way that has so much throttle that you can hardly tell. A playful, yet savage performance.  1:28:58 (Pop-up)
Buzzcocks  I Love You, You Big Dummy / Don't Mess Me 'Round ('76 demos)   Favoriting Time's Up  Buzzcocks / Mute  1976  This represents Buzzcocks in their earliest form, back when Howard Devoto was lead singer (he went on to form Magazine.) This, of course, is the early version of the Captain Beefheart cover Devoto would revisit w/ Magazine. This version is more bluesy, performed in stuttery/punky haphazard fashion. It seamlessly segues into an original (otherwise unreleased) composition "Don't Mess Me 'Round" - I believe you can hear some of the roots of Fiction Romance in it. "No-remix demos, all recorded live, no overdubs... October 1976, 4 track, cost about £45."  1:32:52 (Pop-up)
Buzzcocks  Fiction Romance (Demo)   Favoriting Chronology  EMI  1977  Recorded at Morgan Studios on Dec 14, 1977 in demo sessions for the newer songs to be added to the debut album. I find this version superior to the album version, it has a bit more pep and lightness; the guitar hooks are less prominent, but the vocals are much more up front & sprightly.  1:36:54 (Pop-up)

The Velvet Underground

Guess I'm Falling In Love (Instrumental Version)   Favoriting

White Light / White Heat (Expanded Vinyl Version)

Polydor / Universal Music

1967 / 2014

Recorded Sep 5, 1967 w/ the original lineup (ie. with John Cale.) I actually had several ongoing debates with someone who didn't believe there was a vocal version of the song. It wasn't resolved until I finally found the vocal version and played it. Always found it strange that a debate could be so lengthy and passionate about something so anodyne.

1:41:02 (Pop-up)
Röyksopp feat. Robyn  I'm In Love With A Robot   Favoriting Junior  Wall of Sound  2009  Luuuuuuuuush. Unabashedly grand and romantic, Also very sad. Sometimes we fall in love with robots. It usually doesn't work out unless you're into that sort of thing. Robot fetishism (also ASFR, technosexuality and robophilia) is a fetishistic attraction to humanoid robots; also to people acting like robots or people dressed in robot costumes. A less common fantasy involves transformation into a robot. In these ways it is similar to agalmatophilia, which involves attraction to or transformation into statues or mannequins.  1:45:09 (Pop-up)
Phèdre  Death of Cupid   Favoriting Golden Age  Daps Records  2013  Two years ago, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden in Germany launched a major restoration to make visible a Cupid buried beneath layers of paint in Johannes Vermeer’s Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window (ca. 1657). The museum has since removed the overpainting from the famed work, which now shows an image of Cupid hanging on the wall behind the forlorn young woman. Scholars believe that the newly revealed picture is meant to indicate that the woman is reading a love letter. The existence of the concealed Cupid was first detected in 1979 during an X-ray analysis of the painting.  1:49:10 (Pop-up)
Iggy Pop  Sea of Love   Favoriting Party  Arista  1981  One of Iggy's best, IMHO. Perfection. Party has been poorly received by critics. Charlotte Robinson of PopMatters called it "a bizarre train wreck of an album". Mark Deming of AllMusic wrote "Part of Iggy Pop's unique sort of integrity is that the man doesn't seem to know how to sell out, even when he tries, and Party, one of the strangest albums of his career, is living proof." critics know shit this album is great,  1:54:54 (Pop-up)

Hi Feldy!!! :-)

Tyler:

Buzzcocks & Magazine also both recorded versions of 'Boredom'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm
DJ Babs:

ohhhhhhhh I did not know that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm
Derek Westerholm:

I know they shared Shot By Both Sides & Lipstick... Same riff, different lyrics, different bands.
  9:39pm
Tyler:

The Magazine version of 'Boredom' really takes the song in a new direction. It's great. My favourite Magazine release is the Peel Sessions. Even better than their studio albums. There is also a Peel Session version of 'I Love You, You Dummy.'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Derek Westerholm:

I've never heard the Magazine version of Boredom... Never knew about it... Will try to track that down for sure! Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
DJ Babs:

yes thank u for thetip!
  9:43pm
Tyler:

There is only one Magazine song I don't like which is their cover 'THANKYAFELLTINMEBEMICELF', which there are also several versions of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm
DJ Babs:

ohhhh yeah its not my favourite song so I can see that!
  9:44pm
Tyler:

This demo version of Fiction Romance is pretty awesome. Never heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm
Derek Westerholm:

Tyler, yeah, I don't like their version of that either!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Derek Westerholm:

Crazy, eh? I think this version is far superior to the album version...
  9:46pm
Tyler:

Babs, yeah, I would put that in 'Unnecessary Cover' category.
  9:46pm
Tyler:

Derek, yes this sounds really crisp
