	♥ 2:09pm postconsumer: Here's how I described today's show on my social media: "What if I took EVERY DJ break which Howard Hesseman ever made (as Dr. Johnny Fever, on WKRP in Cincinnati), and just... followed his lead? Would I be able to construct a three hour radio show, with Fever as the host? I was, in fact, and even kept all the music era appropriate (nothing after 1982), and almost everything was actually played on the program (1978-1982). They actually played Captain Beefheart on WKRP? Yes! And Prince? No! Tune in to see if you can tell which tracks I’ve twisted the doctor into playing for you... Just a collage I made, for fun. And then did nothing with. Now, to honor everyone’s favorite DJ, I’ll be sharing it with Sheena’s Jungle Room."

	♥ 2:26pm postconsumer: Thanks! Yes, it was a challenge, but not impossible. I tried the same thing with another fictional dj program and it didn't work out nearly as well. This one stretched to three hours.

	♥ 2:27pm Otis: Remember watching as a kid, alongside other fav sitcoms like 'come and knock on our door' and 'kiss my grits' and this show with Fever, 'booger'. This is like 6th-7th grade TV watching.
	♥ 2:29pm postconsumer: Yes! That's the reason I dug it out of storage. When I first finished it, I couldn't figure out what to do with it, so it just sat on my hard drive.
	♥ 2:29pm Rich in Washington: I've never gotten over the disappointment that Hello Larry's recurring line 'tie a can to it, Ruthie' utterly failed to capture the American zeitgeist.
	♥ 2:30pm Rich in Washington: I would totally listen to a commercial FM station with a format as eclectic as this.

	♥ 2:31pm postconsumer: I just finished watching the whole series, and I can tell you the music director was pulling his hair out, but yeah... I agree, the Doctor usually had it going on.
	♥ 2:33pm Rich in Washington: I had to, Mr. Fab, by orders. It was set in Portland Oregon. Plus, Larry/McLean was a radio DJ.
	2:34pm Mr Fab: Maybe it was a great show. I just know it as a punchline.
	♥ 2:34pm Rich in Washington: It was fairly dismal but I remember people around here being excited that a major US sitcom was set in Portland.
	2:37pm Mr Fab: I like "Grimm," tho i doubt it represented the real Portland - perpetually dark, and seemingly very wooded. You'd never guess Portland was a major city - they were always running thru dark forests.
	♥ 2:38pm Rich in Washington: I plan on watching the SNL from '79 with Hesseman with the skit where he plays himself visiting a real FM radio station and all the jocks take him to task for not wearing headphones in his DJing scenes.

	♥ 2:40pm Rich in Washington: The Grimm brothers house was right next door to my friend Toby's house, so got to see them use the street to shoot exteriors quite a few times.

	3:21pm David in California: I remember when Dr. Demento was interviewed on NPR, and Bob Edwards couldn't believe that Dr. Demento did his show in top hat and tails.

	♥ 3:23pm Otis: Trying to pinpoint my gateway and it was very much a variety. Early 90s start was a combo of listening to Hour of Slack and Over The Edge and just coming off San Fran Hip Hop DJs like Cameron Paul on KMEL and hearing tape dubs of NYC and LA radio (like Russ Parr in LA/Bobby Jimmy)... in High School previous totally Demento and WKRP was one of the shows on the tube with the parents watching. Lots of influences... but probably my very first was AM KFRC San Fran Bay Area DJ Dr. Don Rose.

	3:25pm Pimpdaddysupreme: Just last week, my sister held a digital release party for my dad’s 1978 album “Nobody’s Dreamboat”. Finally available digitally for the first time. As part of that she found the UMatic tape of his appearance and live performance on Dr. Demento.

	♥ 3:26pm Rich in Washington: I only discovered a couple of weeks ago that the first late night DJ which I obsessively tuned into as a teen is now doing radio again on Freeform Portland under the same handle and show title - Stranger Than Fiction with Mr. B. So weird to hear his voice on the air again.

	3:32pm Pimpdaddysupreme: As far as my DJ inspirations, I grew up listening and interacting with radio. Making tapes of myself pretending to intro songs. When I was 10, we moved from Nashville to New Jersey. Between 1985 and 1990 I was most influenced by Kool DJ Red Alert on WRKS Kiss FM and Irwin Chusid on WFMU. Irwin’s “Atrocious Music” show made so much sense to me having grown up with my dad playing me weird and novelty records.

	♥ 3:34pm Otis: PDS, yes... had a couple of KISS FM tape dubs in the late 80s made by a pal who sent me stuff from NYC and would send back dubs of KMEL in San Fran. Atrocious Music, I only had tape dubs of some of the volumes Irwin put out until I could listen to Woof Moo proper in 1999 with the realaudio stream.

	♥ 3:35pm postconsumer: I forgot to mention the nap I took, on our couch, while waiting for the show to start, this AM. Seemed appropriate.
	3:36pm Pimpdaddysupreme: That and WFMU was such a breath of fresh air having come from Nashville’s heavily programmed airwaves. Freeform blew my mind. Back when WFMU was broadcasting from a college in East Orange. (It was East, right? Memories can be foggy)

	♥ 3:51pm Otis: PDS - Atrocious and old mix tapes are long gone (what I had left was shared on the FMU blog). Lots of moving around and purges pre-2005.
	3:52pm David in California: I can understand why DJs remember Howard Hesseman as Dr. Johnny Fever. But I also liked his performances in Dr. Detroit and in the Titan Man segment of Amazon Women of the Moon.
	3:53pm Mr Fab: I heard Irwin when he did some special fill-ins on an LA station in the '90s. I was instantly a fan and like Otis, i jumped on the FMU 'net stream in '99, when the classic "Incorrect Music" show was just hitting. So alas I never heard the "Atrocious" show. I wonder if tapes exist somewhere? Someone digitize 'em pleeze!
	♥ 3:55pm Otis: Irwin may have them still, I had 4 or 5 volumes from tape trading days in the mid-90s.
	♥ 3:58pm Otis: RealAudio 32k stream in 1999... I do have real fond memories of being able to experience radio from distant places. Right up there with nostalgia for trading tapes.
	3:58pm Pimpdaddysupreme: Mr Fab, my favorite moment, which I do believe I have on tape, was Irwin playing this warbly and terribly bland woman singing just left of key and all of a sudden the record starts to speed up and swirl until the needle flies across and off the record. Background music gently fades in and Irwin says, “Even I have my limits, you know.”

Would I be able to construct a three hour radio show, with Fever as the host? I was, in fact, and even kept all the music era appropriate (nothing after 1982), and almost everything was actually played on the program (1978-1982). They actually played Captain Beefheart on WKRP? Yes! And Prince? No! Tune in to see if you can tell which tracks I’ve twisted the doctor into playing for you... Just a collage I made, for fun. And then did nothing with. Now, to honor everyone’s favorite DJ, I’ll be sharing it with Sheena’s Jungle Room."

Early 90s start was a combo of listening to Hour of Slack and Over The Edge and just coming off San Fran Hip Hop DJs like Cameron Paul on KMEL and hearing tape dubs of NYC and LA radio (like Russ Parr in LA/Bobby Jimmy)... in High School previous totally Demento and WKRP was one of the shows on the tube with the parents watching. Lots of influences... but probably my very first was AM KFRC San Fran Bay Area DJ Dr. Don Rose.

	3:32pm Pimpdaddysupreme: As far as my DJ inspirations, I grew up listening and interacting with radio. Making tapes of myself pretending to intro songs. When I was 10, we moved from Nashville to New Jersey. Between 1985 and 1990 I was most influenced by Kool DJ Red Alert on WRKS Kiss FM and Irwin Chusid on WFMU. Irwin’s “Atrocious Music” show made so much sense to me having grown up with my dad playing me weird and novelty records.

Atrocious Music, I only had tape dubs of some of the volumes Irwin put out until I could listen to Woof Moo proper in 1999 with the realaudio stream.

	3:52pm David in California: I can understand why DJs remember Howard Hesseman as Dr. Johnny Fever. But I also liked his performances in Dr. Detroit and in the Titan Man segment of Amazon Women of the Moon.
	3:53pm Mr Fab: I heard Irwin when he did some special fill-ins on an LA station in the '90s. I was instantly a fan and like Otis, i jumped on the FMU 'net stream in '99, when the classic "Incorrect Music" show was just hitting. So alas I never heard the "Atrocious" show. I wonder if tapes exist somewhere? Someone digitize 'em pleeze!
	♥ 3:55pm Otis: Irwin may have them still, I had 4 or 5 volumes from tape trading days in the mid-90s.
	♥ 3:58pm Otis: RealAudio 32k stream in 1999... I do have real fond memories of being able to experience radio from distant places. Right up there with nostalgia for trading tapes.
	3:58pm Pimpdaddysupreme: Mr Fab, my favorite moment, which I do believe I have on tape, was Irwin playing this warbly and terribly bland woman singing just left of key and all of a sudden the record starts to speed up and swirl until the needle flies across and off the record. Background music gently fades in and Irwin says, “Even I have my limits, you know.”
