I'm so old I have an Al Smith story. Back when the Mets were world champions and a subway ride cost $1 I used to drag my sorry ass once a month or so to a small office on E 12th St and 5th Ave to pay whatever part of my rent that my roomates and I could come up with to a man who was so old he probably bought in on the original purchase of manhattan. Every month he would regal me with some shitty story while he recorded my payment long hand into a ledger that had surely been around when my father was born. One day he looks up at me, points over toward a beautiful building on the corner of 5th Ave and 12th and asks, "you see that building?" I nodded or grunted to show that yes I did in fact see the building he was pointing at and he says, "I used to rent the entire top floor of that building to Governor Al Smith for the same amount of money you're giving me today, hahahahahahahaha!!!!"
