While I wasn't a huge fan of Phil Collins' mid-80s solo stuff, I have never understood the hatred directed towards him. It's not like he was Eric Clapton or anything.

'81/'82 - I had discovered late night radio on my local community radio station and my musical world just exploded.

@Rich in Washington for me it wasnt until 1985 I discovered WFMU. and WNYU 89.1

!981 was far cooler than '82. Folks "in the know," know this. (hoo)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, somewhere there's a great article written - either BY Robert Fripp or perhaps by someone else and reposted by him when he was doing his online diary - that listed all the seminal musical projects Collins contributed to outside of Genesis and his solo work.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm

I think around '82 also my brother and I learned of a particular Tower Records which not only had an amazing import indie section but also more magazines and zines than our nearer Tower, so we'd make these semi-regular pilgrimages to that one.

Avatar 🦇 3:22pm
Julie:

oh yes I remember the hour of slack as well. Cha Cha I think they've done away with BC Friday haven't they?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
listener james from westwood:

@phillip The Hour of Slack might have been the first time I heard FMU, while home on break from college during the GHW Bush era. My first actual WFMU-native programming was the following summer, when I was dial-flipping and caught "Got a Lot of Living to Do" performed by Sammy David Jr. shortly after he died. The DJ came on mike afterward and said, "That was Sammy Davis Jr.—GET IT?!" I later learned that was Bronwyn C, then in her big death phase.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 3:23pm

They skipped January last year without saying anything but then started it back up in Feb. So they haven't said anything yet ... here's hoping they follow the same pattern!

Talking of Fleetwood Mac, I recently watched a superb 1980 episode of World in Action (a short but incredibly hard-hitting investigative TV programme) called The Chart Busters, which was about the rigging of chart placements for records at the time. Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust has been critiqued a bit as not really a narrative or Rawk Opera, what have you ...the real 'Concept' of Concept Albums Ive reckoned *is* (...or was) just that - Albums *are* Albums - & the Medium is the Massage as they say. That everyone would be experiencing these things as a long player & a whole.... But - I like how Ziggy hangs together well enuff to *imagine* a narrative - with the title track filling in enuff thematic detail (as Lennon said of Pepper: It works because we *said* it does...) - but not so much heavy sort of 'Libretto' that it chokes it as just Rawk Music - & - or - that you can't fill it in as you please... & while doing this, it encaptured the zeitgeist & time poetically ...tempted to say mythopoetically - as well...

...& always easy to forget the bisexuality aspect of Bowie. As the whole history of LGBTQ culture has been for us cisgender folk. That he *always* felt in drag, if that's not too crudely expressing it...
Dylan spun tales of his origins & identity from the start. & changed whole orientations routinely... Bob & TheBeatles ushering in the whole ethos that one has to change & progress to a large extent... Too easy to not consider the influence of Lennon on Bowie for instance - but it was major...

"Nite Flights" (from "Black Tie White Noise") is Scott Walker's cover. In fact, Bowie has said in interviews that Scott Walker was one of most important and influential musicians for him.
