	12:35pm Handy Haversack: VHS yes, Frank. We have to do periodic book purges just to survive -- otherwise they will overwhelm us. We're already seriously outnumbered by the pets. If they ever ally with the books, we're in real trouble. A couple of years back, we donated the book purge to the umbrella org. of the local shelter for unhoused people. They were having a big drive and collecting 10,000 books to match the 10,000 people they serve. They and HBO made this huge deal of HBO's donating 1,000 books -- but K8 and I donated like 700! Where's our press release, huh?!

With the recent catalogue acquisitions of big name artists by big name record entertainment companies, how are the record companies planning to recoup their investments? Obviously, Sony wouldn't buy Springsteen's catalogue if they wouldn't see profits. At the same time a half a billion dollars is a lot of goddamn money to recoup.

For example, Neil Young's kids may not be in a position to manage the rights to his catalog after he's gone, and whatever financial managers are involved in managing his estate on behalf of his kids might not be experts in music rights management. They'd be experts in money management, though, generically. So, he converts music rights into cash, and invests the cash.

	1:15pm Handy Haversack: Joe, not arguing at all, but my main takeway was just that the media landscape that is to come is one of even greater consolidation and where almost all money in the music industry goes toward the use of a library belonging to a few major companies to produce microtracks for social media. So an anti-artist, anti-song, anti-album and anti-getting-paid-for-art future where the salable bits are increasingly tiny and the rules the catalogue clearing houses will set up will deny meaningful payment to artists, along the lines of Spotify, for the use thereof. I didn't get as a takeway: "hey, don't sell out, artist!" (Though of course, since I'm generally pretty dense, I might have missed it!) But rather that the ones doing the buying are setting up an artist-less future of TikTok tunez. But I'm also a marked pessimist.

Especially when I than afternoon meetings. re: musicians "selling out" -- I guess if the model of. say, EFD, playing your a track from your latest LP a few times on a major FM station during "prime time" resulted in an extra 10,000 copies in sales in a week still existed in 2022, there wouldn't be a problem. Regarding legacy acts selling off their publishing now -- The smartest move possible. If I'm almost 80 years old making millions off my songs and I've had three wives and five kids over the years, the last situation I want is these folks having to go into "business" with each other sitting around a table arguing and making decisions after I slip off the mortal coil. Just cash out and will those you want cold hard cash and be done with it.

	1:27pm McGroovey: I don't use Spotify because on my Android phone I'd need to pay to get features I would actually use, like being able to choose what songs i hear. If I want other people (or a computer) to pick songs for me, I'll let WFMU DJs (or a WFMU computer) do it. And I know Spotify pays artists cr$p. If I want to give money to people to pick music for me, I'll give it to WFMU. And if I want to choose what I hear when I'm not at home, I'll give artists money more directly, and more fairly, through Bandcamp, and then listen through the Bandcamp app.
	1:28pm prof.fuzz: @van: our releases had been distributed by CD Baby and Catapult. Both had easy to use web interface for removing releases from select platforms. It took about 10 minutes to make the requests for five albums across two distributors, and about 3-4 days for the content to be pulled from spotify, amazon, and others. We left our music up on Apple and Tidals. Bandcamp is separate, and our preferred distribution site.

	12:35pm Handy Haversack: VHS yes, Frank. We have to do periodic book purges just to survive -- otherwise they will overwhelm us. We're already seriously outnumbered by the pets. If they ever ally with the books, we're in real trouble. A couple of years back, we donated the book purge to the umbrella org. of the local shelter for unhoused people. They were having a big drive and collecting 10,000 books to match the 10,000 people they serve. They and HBO made this huge deal of HBO's donating 1,000 books -- but K8 and I donated like 700! Where's our press release, huh?!

With the recent catalogue acquisitions of big name artists by big name record entertainment companies, how are the record companies planning to recoup their investments? Obviously, Sony wouldn't buy Springsteen's catalogue if they wouldn't see profits. At the same time a half a billion dollars is a lot of goddamn money to recoup.

	12:52pm McGroovey: One big motivation for older artists to sell their catalogs for big bucks is estate planning. For example, Neil Young's kids may not be in a position to manage the rights to his catalog after he's gone, and whatever financial managers are involved in managing his estate on behalf of his kids might not be experts in music rights management. They'd be experts in money management, though, generically. So, he converts music rights into cash, and invests the cash.

	1:15pm Handy Haversack: Joe, not arguing at all, but my main takeway was just that the media landscape that is to come is one of even greater consolidation and where almost all money in the music industry goes toward the use of a library belonging to a few major companies to produce microtracks for social media. So an anti-artist, anti-song, anti-album and anti-getting-paid-for-art future where the salable bits are increasingly tiny and the rules the catalogue clearing houses will set up will deny meaningful payment to artists, along the lines of Spotify, for the use thereof. I didn't get as a takeway: "hey, don't sell out, artist!" (Though of course, since I'm generally pretty dense, I might have missed it!) But rather that the ones doing the buying are setting up an artist-less future of TikTok tunez. But I'm also a marked pessimist.

Regarding legacy acts selling off their publishing now -- The smartest move possible. If I'm almost 80 years old making millions off my songs and I've had three wives and five kids over the years, the last situation I want is these folks having to go into "business" with each other sitting around a table arguing and making decisions after I slip off the mortal coil. Just cash out and will those you want cold hard cash and be done with it.

If I want other people (or a computer) to pick songs for me, I'll let WFMU DJs (or a WFMU computer) do it. And I know Spotify pays artists cr$p. If I want to give money to people to pick music for me, I'll give it to WFMU. And if I want to choose what I hear when I'm not at home, I'll give artists money more directly, and more fairly, through Bandcamp, and then listen through the Bandcamp app.
	1:28pm prof.fuzz: @van: our releases had been distributed by CD Baby and Catapult. Both had easy to use web interface for removing releases from select platforms. It took about 10 minutes to make the requests for five albums across two distributors, and about 3-4 days for the content to be pulled from spotify, amazon, and others. We left our music up on Apple and Tidals. Bandcamp is separate, and our preferred distribution site.
