Irene, I spoke to Gary Lucas after his show in Manchester in '92. He told me about Jeff, which put me in pole position to see Jeff's first London show in '94 at a tiny little venue. It was magical, and we hung around afterwards because we didn't want to leave and break the spell. Jeff reappeared and invited us to go round the corner to this old venue called the 12-Bar which he wanted to see because Nick Drake used to play there. Ended up there about 2am, with Jeff playing a set for just four of us. I skinned up for him and he gave me a hyacinth, which I still have pressed between the pages of a book. Never met anyone else like him. He was absolutely luminous.

Circling back to Zoot Horn Rollo for a moment: If Beefheart said in 1974 that he had stopped playing, he was, let's just say, misinformed. He and some other Beefheart alumni formed Mallard that very year -- a very good band that never got much attention and broke up after, I think, two albums. By the way, this Joni Mitchell music is amazing. Whoever got that archival box for Irene as a Christmas present has good taste!

Everyone at home (wife, both my girls who were starting over for New Years, but now back in their homes) is sick (cough cold symptoms, achy) except me. Both girls tested negative for COVID, just regular winter viruses.
The worst is my 13 year old pooch, who's developed what likely is doggie dementia. He pages and barks all night long, looks like he's having a panic attack. Started him on meds, but they take a while to kick in, and we're exhausted (this was hard enough with a newborn 30 years ago...)

So many connections between Bowie, Barrett, and Walker. Bowie always love them both - said hearing Syd sing like a Brit and not copying Americans was hugely influential on him. I have a recording of a call-in show with Bowie done on the BBC on Bowie's birthday - and guess who called in to wish him happy b-day? Scott Walker! Bowie was moved to tears, right on the air.
