Hello Larry. Lots of Mike Nesmith to remember.

YES! Merry Monkeemas to you all Testifiers! I'm ready for the Mike Nesmith tribute and 30 minute Xmas show.

Howdy. Always one of my favorite songs!

Linda was so danged cute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Philippe! Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm
Michael 98145:

Guess i never realized Mike N wrote that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm
Phillippe:

Different Drum would've made more sense if Nesmith was a drummer. But that's really nitpicking
Avatar 3:05pm
Erica:

I can hear Mike's voice in this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm
Phillippe:

Agreed Erica
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm
Funky16Corners:

@Michael - Mike was getting some fat royalty checks from the Stone Poney's recordings!
Avatar 3:06pm
alanr:

Glad you're doing this, as his Monkees fame may have made him known, but not in the way that represents his best talents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
Funky16Corners:

Hi Alan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
Funky16Corners:

The flipside of this 45 is a version of the Beatles 'Rain'
Avatar 3:08pm
Erica:

True alanr. But people wouldn't have discovered Mike's music if the Monkees didn't make him known.
Avatar 3:08pm
Erica:

Or his best talents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Phillippe:

I agree Alan. I was always a big fan of his, but really did not know the extent of his influence on the country rock scene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
Funky16Corners:

I think by the end of the second set you'll see that the Monkees did indeed provide a window into Nesmith's talents. A very interesting and diverse collection of songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
Phillippe:

Sadly, I gotta run, but will be listening intermittently from the road and definitely on the archive. Have a Merry Christmas everyone! And thank you so much for your fine programs this year, Larry!
Avatar 3:11pm
alanr:

It's a complex matter, but, yes, it did put him on the map, instead of a smaller career whose music gained fame from others who performed his songs like Linda. So, i'll rollback my comment a bit....just a bit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm
Funky16Corners:

Merry Christmas Phillippe! You're quite welcome!
Avatar 3:15pm
Erica:

December is truly the month of the Monkees. With the passing of Mike Nesmith and the fact that Dec. 30 is the birthday of the late Nesmith and Davy Jones, it's been nothing but Monkees for me.
Avatar 3:16pm
Erica:

Late Nesmith and late Davy Jones that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20pm
Funky16Corners:

I was discussing Davy with some friends this weekend, mainly about how underestimated he is.
Avatar 3:20pm
Erica:

I believe the Monkees' version of Mary Mary came out a year before Paul Butterfield Blues Band version, or around the same time Larry.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:21pm
Brian in UK:

In this country it was one of the first fanzines, Zigzag, that promoted his and John Stewart's talents. Saw them both at Zigzag's fifth anniversary concert in 1974. Nesmith & Red Rhodes. Great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:22pm
Funky16Corners:

@Erica - From the Wiki - "Mary, Mary" is a song written by Michael Nesmith and first recorded by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band for their 1966 album, East-West. Nesmith's band, the Monkees, later recorded it for More of the Monkees (1967).
Avatar 3:23pm
Erica:

You better edit the tracklisting then Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Nesmith gets a lot of credit for country rock (some of it deserved) but the origins were much more complicated. This show I did a while back puts it in context: wfmu.org...
Avatar 3:25pm
Erica:

You wrote the Paul Butterfield Blues Band album East West as 1967, not 66.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
Funky16Corners:

I just fixed it
Avatar 3:26pm
Erica:

Okay thanks Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm

No probs. Thanks for catching it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:29pm

This is a little Beatlesesque (if there is such a word)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm

It is indeed. I think I included it in my Revolver show.

No, it was the Taxman show! wfmu.org...

I honestly prefer the TV version of You Just May Be The One for the vocals but the Headquarters version is great too.

For some reason "Don't Call on Me", The Girl I Knew Somewhere" and Mike Nesmith's solo hit "Joanne" make me cry.

Very pretty Larry. I can't help but choke up.

Picked up Birds Bees at a garage sale a few months ago and realized I was pretty unfamiliar with that album. I like it much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Mike Sin:

Does anyone here have LPs in their collection on the Colgems label that aren't Monkees LPs? I don't, but I think the only other one I've seen out in the "wild" was the "Lewis & Clark Expedition" LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Funky16Corners:

@Woo - There's a lot of great stuff on those later albums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm

@Mike - Only Lewis and Clark

The Fountain of Youth 45s on Colgems are good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm

I just checked Discogs to see that Rich Little was a Colgems artist (!) -- I'm guessing that single sold twice the amount of "I'm a Believer"...

maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm
Funky16Corners:

But not as much as his Ronald Reagan Rap...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Woo:

this is the song with a note saying when the recording skips, it's not your record player. Do not be alarmed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm

It looks like that Colgems 45 is a Senator Bobby rip-off

@Woo - I never caught that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

hey Larry & all

I always thought that was an actual vinyl rip of the song. Didn't know Magnolia Sims was intended to sound like a scratchy record that skipped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Mike Sin:

On the back of "The Birds, The Bees..." LP cover is the note to the listeners about the "vintage" sound Magnolia Simms
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
coelacanth∅:

i still wonder...i guess the monkeys, or Nesmith, took the cue from the beatles (when i'm 64) did an excellent job with as style/shtick that more often than not is total crap, then Macca did honey pie in response?
...but i don't ever want to hear that again! whereas i could stand magnolia simms several more times!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Funky16Corners:

Everyone was messing around with that sound, megaphone vocals, tack piano, banjos, on and on etc. Not much of it holds up well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Funky16Corners:

Speak of the devil...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
coelacanth∅:

haha, yeah i cringe for most of it!
but i loved honey pie as a child. one of my 10 least favorite beatles songs now, i guess.
...and when my friend George played me the birds, the bees & the monkees the first time i was bowled over by magnolia
Avatar 4:15pm
Erica:

Mike sings a psychedelic version of Listen to the Band in the special 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee, which I've seen once online and thought that version was trippy and scary.

Jingle Bells.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm

Do you know if there was ever a legit home video release of 33 1/3?

I believe Rhino released it a couple of times according to Wikipedia.

I don't know if anyone in recent years tried to call out the surviving members of the Lampoon crew for some of the depraved and offensive magazine material that through today's lens could make eyebrows jump, jaws drop and excoriations go a'ragin'.
