I will be quite surprised to learn Ian &/or JoyDivision leaned Fascist or even RightWing. Yeah a sober view of the dark side of society &/or humanity would be another thing... Though Bowie for example took his self-destruction & persona chasing into some pretty messed up places - being atuned enuff as a Creative to anticipate Reagan & Thatcher I think.

The anti-hippie sentiment was pretty strong - whereas actual psychedelic experience & actual Punk life (beyond just Media I mean) all rushed into my life @ the same time then. Later in the 1980s in Santa Barbara - there were Skins who created a frisson of danger & fear when they passed by you. & @ the same time - one felt they made the Scene 'real' somehow. (An irony.) Out there - you actually had Reagan on his Ranch...

The cover artwork shows a photograph, taken at Easington Colliery, of the band apparently having just urinated on a large concrete piling protruding from a slag heap.[38] The decision to shoot the picture came from Entwistle and Moon discussing Stanley Kubrick and the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.[39] According to photographer Ethan Russell, only Townshend actually urinated against the piling, so rainwater was tipped from an empty film canister to achieve the desired effect. The sky in the background was added later to give the image what Russell called "this other worldly quality."
