Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from November 19, 2021 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hi TonyR and HyperDose!!! I was just making a little reference to the line "And tell them to Hollanderize it/For some other dame" in "Take Back Your Mink" from "Guys and Dolls"

Hi Theater goers! Bronwyn is playing one of my theme songs.

I thought about drinking too much a little while ago, but then I realized, "I need to keep my head clear for Acid Jazz Hands." Let's see if that helps.
Avatar 7:03pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Tony: is that better?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm

The real original cast of Alice... was in 1984.
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:03pm

That did pump up the volume. Thanks.

@Henry: I have only just discovered this song and I LOVE IT. I'm gonna play it for potential composer/collaborators and say "just make it all sound like this"

A couple of shitkickin' songs - about marryin' a gambin' bride, for one - were online at 7. Couldn;'t figure out what show they would have been from, but I got back to my seat from the bar too early.

I wonder what pink beverage you can get at a bar that's effervescent?
Avatar 🎭 7:36pm
Listener Gregory:

Gentle & noble Bronwyn, "I Love You" is probably a deep cut in terms of Cole Porter's musical oeuvre, but it is actually pretty familiar to jazz listeners, as it has been covered, most notably by Bill Evans, and others. @doctorj, do you know it?
Avatar 7:40pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Tony: No but I do have a Jule Styne crushed ice dispenser

Who will write the Great American K-pop musical?
Avatar 7:58pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Very excited for that Cyrano! Probably the only Cyrano musical we haven't heard from on this show yet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm
doctorjazz:

LG @ 7:36, sure, know that one, and an even more "famous" (if a jazz recording can be thought of as famous) is the John Coltrane version. I didn't realize it was a "deep cut", but that's because I heard most of these as jazz versions first).

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm

Wow! I was JUST thinking that this might be a good song for this show!
Avatar 8:00pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Tony: Jason Kim, Helen Park and Max Vernon, who wrote the Off-Broadway musical KPOP from 2017!
Avatar 8:00pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I just meant that Mexican Hayride is a deep cut musical haha, not the song necessarily
Avatar 8:01pm

The real Sondheim as Sondheim is also in the movie CAMP, which is kind of uneven, but certainly music-theatre friendly! www.imdb.com...
  8:20pm

@doctorj, with all the reissues and box sets, I don’t know what Coltrane I have any more.
  8:22pm
Listener Gregory:

Bronwyn, apparently “The Lion, the Witch…” was the first written and published Narnia book. Much later Lewis wrote a prequel (according to Wikipedia), though some people argue it shouldn’t be read first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm

True, LG, lots of Trane out there (and they keep finding me material to release).
Gotta run, thanks, Bronwyn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm

Avatar 8:26pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I didn't know that either, the things I learn doing this show! I had a box set of those books as a kid and The Magician's Nephew was first, and I didn't question that
Avatar 8:26pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm
Webhamster Henry:

Ahh, cabaret!
Avatar 8:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

i hear that's what life is
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm
Webhamster Henry:

You could do a Cabaret, Revue, and one-person jukebox show, that includes a lot of pre-song patter.
Avatar 8:33pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I did that on September 24th!
  8:33pm
Listener Gregory:

The Magician’s Nephew takes place before the other novels, but The Lion… is written as if the reader has never heard of Narnia. So maybe it should still be read first. When you write the musical versions, you can fix all that!

Listener Gregory:

Love Quadrophenia!

Avatar 8:41pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Not sure who that was, not Roger Daltrey though (it was a production of the musical)
Avatar 🎭 8:44pm

I will bet a million dollars that that was actually Roger Daltrey. However, if I lose, I cannot pay.
Avatar 🎭 8:48pm

OK, looked it up and it might not be Daltrey after all. I can write you a check, but don't cash it until I give you the word.

I will wait patiently and imagine what I shall spend my million dollars on (dijon ketchup?)
