Trouble:

Good Morning nature lovers! Liberty State Park is not yet protected from Billionaire Fireman's attempt to grab Caven Point to enlarge his luxury golf course. Please call NJ Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin
(732-855-7441) and ask him to post the Liberty State Park Protection Act Bill # A2189 on the Assembly Agriculture & Natural Resources Committee agenda, and for Speaker Coughlin to strongly support this protection act without any exemptions for the Caven Point natural area.

To override Fireman's purchasing of phone bots to falsify support for his land grab, please give your opinion on why we need to protect Liberty State Park from this sort of private theft and what Liberty State Park means to you, Jersey City and people all over New Jersey. Please insist on leaving your name, town and phone # to solidify that you are a real person who cares.
Merci!

Right now the DEP has authority to "lease out" whatever parts of LSP they wish to. @trouble semi-related to your park story, yesterday someone (a realtor i think) completely slashed the incredible garden and 2 beautiful mature magnolia trees in my former neighbor's back yard. It had been overgrown and definitely needed work, but it was heartbreaking to see the entire thing mowed down. It was one of my favorite yards in the neighborhood, one of the few places with enough plant life to provide cover for wildlife. I was literally shaking as i walked by this morning.

Orwell wrote an excellent piece on enclosure in England: "Stop to consider how the so-called owners of the land got hold of it. They simply seized it by force, afterwards hiring lawyers to provide them with title-deeds. In the case of the enclosure of the common lands, which was going on from about 1600 to 1850, the land-grabbers did not even have the excuse of being foreign conquerors; they were quite frankly taking the heritage of their own countrymen, upon no sort of pretext except that they had the power to do so."

Ben in Long Melford, UK:

In the UK... electric bicycles are limited to 250W and 15mph with the same rules as apply to pushbikes, e.g. front and rear lights needed at night, no helmet needed and not allowed on pavements ("sidewalks") and some big roads, and there's no requirement to have a driving licence. Electric scooters (like the little push along ones) are only allowed on certain roads as part of approved rental schemes and you need to have a driving licence to rent them. Private electric scooters are only allowed on private land. You don't really see the rental schemes outside of cities much. The reality is that people ride electric scooters on the road and pavement and the police do very little about it.

The most galling part to me of the 1% ruling and ruining our lives is how they get to live in almost total anonymity.

A black kid with the weight of institutional racism on his back 24/7 since his /her birth can make one misstep and be on the covers of every local newspaper and dominate tv news. While a little pampered and privileged older white businessman can steal billions from the savings of thousands of working class people and nobody ever sees his face or sees a case built against him or be subjected to a salacious media frenzy of investigation into his whole personal history.

There should be a repository of the biggest Wall St Economic Terrorists, complete with tons of intrusive photos and prying onto their personal histories and current whereabouts. So that We The People can organize serious protest that will put some fear into them.

I walk on a local hiking/bike trail and find regular cyclists to be fairly safe (also a unicyclist who freaks me out every time). But twice I have seen e-bikes zip by without being in full control, on a path that can have wet leaves, mud, the occasional fallen rock, etc., as well as pedestrians around a curve. I think the motor encourages them to set a particular speed at the beginning and not adjust it to specific conditions the way a leg-powered bike automatically does throughout the ride.

Since Caven Point was purchased with State Green Acres funds in 1978, any change removing it from public access and destroying its natural status requires authorization from the NJ Dept of Environmental Protection. Aside from it being an irreplaceable surviving wetland and ecological resource, many don't realize Liberty State Park is by far the most visited. In 2019, to get a pre-COVID perspective, with almost 5 million people, it easily tops D&R Canal State Park's 1.3 million. That's evidence of both the popularity of LSP's attractions, and Hudson County's lack of open space.

Doug, but cars are seen as essential in most places, whereas 2-wheelers (and the ability to walk) are so endemic to life in NYC (and JC I presume). @βrian I usually pass on the left unless the situation makes passing on the right safer for the walker. A basic "I'll be passing on your left" about 10-20 yards away is courteous. and in Swahili.

Getting the MTA to actually fix public transportation unfortunately has given rise to a worst possible case scenario for non-car-owning, non-biking pedestrians -- bike lanes that only make traffic worse , therefore more bikes, e-bikes, scooters, etc on the sidewalks. I can't ride a bike and it's not practical for most people who actually WORK in Manhattan but live in the outer boros....

There's also one more aspect of people commuting in their respective way, and that is there's a three way out of sync speed movement and mindset between the motorist the cyclist and the pedestrian. and even though everyone is aware of this difference their mind is currently occupied with dealing with their own particular method of operating of movement and just want to get to point b from point A with minimal hassle. For example the motorist is in sync with other motorists and therefore don't want to be bothered with having to readjust that sync to accommodate a cyclist or pedestrian. And so goes the same viewpoint from a cyclist and The pedestrian of all whom don't want to be interrupted with a constant change with the simple task of just trying to move along, therefore people are always getting irritated with each other that leads to frustration and the loss of patience which is a prime ingredients that makes the three-way out of sync commuters all just an accident waiting to happen at one time or another unfortunately on a daily basis as we all know. They say patience is a virtue, well commuting has got to be one of the biggest ongoing testing of that virtue.
