Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from October 22, 2021 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

It was Pat Byrne a few years ago from whom I learned about these routines. When he had his video-streamed variety program produced the night (or a few hours) before, he would fill the last half hour of his program streaming video from studio like this, including the audio from his headphones. while the actual program went on the regular radio and audio stream. Oh, so THAT's what "neutral" on a turntable was for, and THAT must be what's meant by "cueing up". All those years -- including studio visits -- I'd never known.

Fifty years ago tomorrow on October 23 1971, KPPC the sister station of KMPX in San Francisco, the first two free form stations on the West Coast changes forever. Everyone was fired. Like WFMU, KPPC in Pasadena was a ground breaking station filled with weirdo personality. Founded by the late great Tom Donahue, it left everything else in the dust. I started listening to KPPC in 1968 when I was twelve years old. I can't take another heartbreak like that...Okay, I'm getting out my credit card.

Wait a minute! Wasn't it just coincidence that singles going steady week wound up during what used to be the silent marathon? I wouldn't call it the reason it's there.

It's an October fundraiser event, irrespective of its origins.

Al....there's a great box reissue of all his singles, all 45 Rpm in the box (I lucked out, a friend have out to me when he was moving to smaller digs, and put all his music on hard drive).

Singles going steady week in olden times was a celebration of the fall record fair back when there were two record fairs a year at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan.

Yeah, The Ronettes. The air outside was clean and fresh. There were 20 cars on the highway. Wilbert Harrison was on the radio every day. Never even heard of Vietnam. sigh.

i bet "Dicky Doo And The Don'ts" inspired the phrase in The Simpson's gag book "Don't Do What Donny Don't Does" (i think Bart was trying to become a boyscout or something) -- anyway, hadn't heard of them before. great name
