Lizardner Dave !:

Probably an unpopular take but my favorite Ubu era is from the late 1980s-early 1990s, probably because I first saw them at the Cat Club in July 1988 and met the band afterward. David Thomas signed a copy of The Tenement Year and drew a little car on it. Sadly Superstorm Sandy washed away that artifact.

Yes; some of these recordings are out of phase, and so are barely audible if listened to in mono. Broadcast listeners need to switch to stereo, if possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm

@Yeti Yep. Their part on Urgh! with that lineup is the top entry in the film

My favorite David Thomas moment was seeing them play at some festival show where the stage was ridiculously over-adorned with Molson Canadian beer signage. DT came out onstage and immediately asked the crowd "Who here would rather drink out of Lake Erie than ever drink a Molson product??", to rapturous applause. At the end of Ubu's set, as the final chords still shook and before any of the band had even left the stage, some Molson rep on damage-control ran out onstage with a t-shirt cannon and other freebies to launch at the crowd.

My friend's band would bring a hammer and a 1' piece of a rail... Sounds similar
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm

Well, probably not then, but in the eighties...back then he had a more standard hammer i.pinimg.com...

Woof Rack:

"Shot peening works by striking a surface with a shot (round metallic, glass or ceramic particle) with enough force to generate plastic deformation. When a group of shots impact the surface they generate multiple indentations, resulting in the component being encased by a compressive stressed layer on the metal surface."

I saw Pere Ubu at The Whiskey in Hollywood in the summer of 1979. At that time, Allen Ravenstine had the most ginormus synth with all kinds of wires sticking out of it. David beat on a piece of metal with a hammer. It was Modern Dance time.

of all the music I listened to as a teenager, I think Pere Ubu made my parents worry about me the most. They could sort of understand the loud-fast punk stuff, but this is slow and dark and pretty haunted.

@Franco - that ginormous synth was the Electrocomp 200 and was used mostly in schools for electronic music education. A pretty simple modular actually but with a test lab aesthetic. I played one in 1975 in a public high school. It had a wonderful spring reverb inside.
