She would love the current soundscape paired with this tender painting. Life doesn't last forever, but the soul lives on sometimes through art and friendship and remembrance...

	9:42am unpopularfred: two thoughts (you've caught me in a contemplative mood this morning) I worked in record stores for a long time and it was a job a loved but paid a totally unsustainable wage, leading to lots of debt and not doing things (traveling, buying a house, building up savings) because I had no money, which is perceivable as loserdom. Also, music can be an escape, and many people prefer living in the escape world to the "real" one, or a least the one the success driven live in.

	9:50am Zipperhead7: I went to a rave in Houston many years ago, and the DJ played "You Only Live Twice" as the very last song. The doors were opened and it was a bright morning with workers on their way to their jobs. We staggered outside like survivors of a plane crash.

	10:51am Troymo: I worked in a music store 87-93. Saw the rise of cassette singles and CD’s replacing vinyl. Most of my fellow workers were College students. They didn’t pay a living wage but gave us 30% off our music purchases. I spent on average around 1/8 of every paycheck on tunes.

	10:56am drr: I worked in a record store in Tennessee in 1986. The things I remember: every day someone would ask when the new Doug E. Fresh was coming out. (As far as I know, it never did.) Also, the pre-release hype of Lionel Richie's "Dancing On the Ceiling" was so big we ordered a lot. It sold great the first day but hardly at all after that.

	11:10am Rich in Washington: When I was a teenager, my brother & I would make this semi-regular pilgrimage to our closest Tower Records (like an hour away) and we learned if a record had this scrawled "RECOMMENDED!" by one particular clerk, we had to buy it on the spot. Decades later, I recently discovered that that clerk is one of my fellow DJs at the station I do a show it.

	11:12am sphere: Finding good records at Tower Records was definitely an art. The first time I saw Labradford in the stacks, someone had written "Uneasy listening music" on the card. Of course I bought their first CD sight unseen.
	11:15am TDK60: When I worked a record store, Soul II Soul was a big album. I asked every customer, "Do you know they're British?" Nobody did, and nobody cared either. Typical US insularity.

	11:17am Rich in Washington: Not all Towers were created equal. The one nearer me in town proper had a slightly lackluster selection compared to the one further away but also had all the in-store signing events.

	11:17am jt: Got me thinking: the foundation of my record collecting began at Mystery Train near Harvard, where students created a regular turnover of good records. Just looking at "Our Nations Savings Grace" w/ a $3.50 price tag on it (!) same w/ Mission of Burma and a Wanda Landowska on Piano, for $1. I still play these records today.

	11:20am JT: my early tween/teen musical taste (11-13) was in part curated by the manager of my local indie store as a counterpoint to the print music criticism i devoured at the time. he opened up my world beyond commercial radio and was in no way mawkish or lacking so-called life skills. i’d get side-eye once in a while for my selections, but that was just part of the experience.
	11:21am TDK60: Good record shops in the '70s had import bins. Back then, some Euro/Asian LPs could only be found that way. More pricey but..
	11:21am Trouble: in your ear is now larger than ever and in warren ri, about 12 minutes east of providence, so yes @ on the way to fall river. IYE is now by the water in warren: huge space and goegeous waterfront spot.

All welcome to try this process and use the indigo vat. Bring old pillow cases or sheets, or any cotton fabric,tshirts you would like to dye. 	11:33am Paul in the OC: Providence was good for record stores during the 80s-90s, probably still good, which is funny since Ian Faith says it’s not a big College town. RoundAgain was also good and then there was teh legendary Luke’s in Pawtucket, now gone. Got a lot of open reel tapes & some Fillmore West posters from Luke for not insane money back in the day. I will echo the sentiment concerning the curated collection & undoubtedly I bought a few items from you, Trouble!

	11:40am Mike W: And I think so many of the experiences that lead up to being an avid record-buyer and record-store-goer are things that young men and boys get celebrated for, while young women and girls get lightly (or not so) excluded for. A little like the old dynamic of, toy trucks are for him while dolls are for her?
	11:40am sphere: Part of the Dudefest Dilemma is a self-perpetuating feeling that records are for guys. Girlfriends I have had don't even try to get into the music, possibly because of the testosterone-laden atmosphere.
	11:41am JT: yeah the dudefest/neck beard/mansplain world of the music in general has sucked for too long
	11:41am E: Amanda Petrusich wrote a book called Do Not Sell At Any Price that dives on the collecting psychology. I recommend it to everyone!!! She touches on the gender gap a little but I don't want to misquote her. Read that book though! Resonated with me even if I'm not at the level that the 78 collectors she profiles are at. Nobody else is at that level.

	11:44am TDK60: I would always be up and cheerful (not overly) with Other Music staff. It was a job you know. Sometimes my good mood would help a bit, even if I was buying something not cool enough. Heh.
	11:44am sphere: I can't put my finger on specific stores, but some record stores are friendly to certain groups of people and arrogant assholes to outsiders. So some people talk about how friendly X Record Store is while others say the exact opposite.
	11:44am drr: Everyones mileage varies. Said friend is a female music journalist now, if that shines any light.
	11:45am John L: When I owned a record store I made sure I tried my best to avoid most of the record store clerk tropes, though I did play a lot of Yo La Tengo and Big Star, and I'd like to think I was successful. I greeted everyone who walked in the door, said I could assist them if they needed it and mostly stayed out of their way. I would overhear some ridiculous conversations, with the guy going out of his way to pour out every piece of arcane knowledge to the woman he was with. I would keep an eye on what people seemed interested in and then try and play music that might connect with them. As far as Other Music goes, I never got the snob vibe.
	11:46am E: Poptimism flipped the "cool" meter upside down, I doubt anyone can really feel judged anymore by hip record clerks, unless you're buying Buckcherry or Imagine Dragons LPs I suppose...
	11:46am YETI BOB: Mrs Yeti was not into records when we met (20 years ago), she just listened to CDs and ITunes. But she's gotten into collecting records too, she likes to pick up vintage jazz LPs (Blue Note/Impulse). So we often go record shopping together. It's a fun thing to do when you are in a new city - a coffeeshop, a record store and a brewpub and my Saturday is complete.

	11:48am E: When I managed a record store I would have fun playing all the cool stuff that had been banished to the dollar bin, just to prove to people that market value was not a reliable measurement for quality
	11:48am Mike W: Amanda P’s book is really good. Duane did work at Other Music and was always such a good presence there. Scott Mou too. These are people who converse comfortably with anyone interested in any types of music. They also had many employees who were less comfortable in conversation, on music or perhaps any subject, and when someone is shopping for music they’re often, in small ways, looking for some affirmation (perhaps since there are so many choices). Without a friendly, garrulous person helping someone pick a record or ring them up, that affirmation may seem absent. So maybe the shopper buys the record in their hand but comes away feeling like they didn’t earn the approval (of a dude at the store) for their purchase, and they find the overall experience slightly aversive, and don’t go back as frequently. Other Music in no way had a monopoly on diffident record-store employees, but since it was clearly seen (and self-appointed really) as Manhattan Indie Record Store No. 1, examples of weird vibes from employees there might have stuck out more. So many great records bought there and at the Tower across the street.
	11:49am TDK60: I get testy with pushy record hunters. They elbow in right as you try to start a row. This happens at the WFMU record fair too. They're usually men.
	11:49am morphe': Sadly for some musicians ... I stopped buying records in 198? when I discovered WFMU .. I did fund folks through many gigs...The last record I bought 1986? was THE NIHILIST SPASM BAND at the NEW MUSIC EXCHANGE ... Had heard them on Tony Coulter's WKCR show...

	11:54am Paul in the OC: LIvely discussion re music stores & collecting, topics the wife and I talk about on long trips for a LONG time. The psychology of collecting is yet another good PhD thesis. I recall the young male collector instinct to be a replacement for human contact and certainly opposite sex contact, so the average record dude did end up fairly antisocial. A young woman who drops into this atmos is likely to find it pretty off putting, which is not to say that I have not met plenty of lady record collectors, and they are typically pretty socialized, so there’s a distinction for ya. Meanwhile, here’s a lady collector dropping a great playlist so fooey on all that testosterone collector stuff!

	11:55am Mike W: Another frequent experience: Behind the counter at this (Sound Fix) or that (Kim’s on First Ave) record store, someone approaches tentatively with maybe a Grizzly Bear record, or Arcade Fire, and gingerly slides it across the counter to be rung up, possibly even saying, “This is a little embarrassing but...” “My friend,” I tried to always say. “We’re the ones who stocked this record! For you to buy. Ask me anything about any record in the shop, but please don’t feel weird for buying something we’re selling. I don’t.” (Though sometimes I did, a little.)

	9:42am unpopularfred: two thoughts (you've caught me in a contemplative mood this morning) I worked in record stores for a long time and it was a job a loved but paid a totally unsustainable wage, leading to lots of debt and not doing things (traveling, buying a house, building up savings) because I had no money, which is perceivable as loserdom. Also, music can be an escape, and many people prefer living in the escape world to the "real" one, or a least the one the success driven live in.

Also, the pre-release hype of Lionel Richie's "Dancing On the Ceiling" was so big we ordered a lot. It sold great the first day but hardly at all after that.

	11:10am Rich in Washington: When I was a teenager, my brother & I would make this semi-regular pilgrimage to our closest Tower Records (like an hour away) and we learned if a record had this scrawled "RECOMMENDED!" by one particular clerk, we had to buy it on the spot. Decades later, I recently discovered that that clerk is one of my fellow DJs at the station I do a show it.

	11:41am E: Amanda Petrusich wrote a book called Do Not Sell At Any Price that dives on the collecting psychology. I recommend it to everyone!!! She touches on the gender gap a little but I don't want to misquote her. Read that book though! Resonated with me even if I'm not at the level that the 78 collectors she profiles are at. Nobody else is at that level.

	11:44am sphere: I can't put my finger on specific stores, but some record stores are friendly to certain groups of people and arrogant assholes to outsiders. So some people talk about how friendly X Record Store is while others say the exact opposite.
	11:44am drr: Everyones mileage varies. Said friend is a female music journalist now, if that shines any light.
	11:45am John L: When I owned a record store I made sure I tried my best to avoid most of the record store clerk tropes, though I did play a lot of Yo La Tengo and Big Star, and I'd like to think I was successful. I greeted everyone who walked in the door, said I could assist them if they needed it and mostly stayed out of their way. I would overhear some ridiculous conversations, with the guy going out of his way to pour out every piece of arcane knowledge to the woman he was with. I would keep an eye on what people seemed interested in and then try and play music that might connect with them. As far as Other Music goes, I never got the snob vibe.
	11:46am E: Poptimism flipped the "cool" meter upside down, I doubt anyone can really feel judged anymore by hip record clerks, unless you're buying Buckcherry or Imagine Dragons LPs I suppose...
	11:46am YETI BOB: Mrs Yeti was not into records when we met (20 years ago), she just listened to CDs and ITunes. But she's gotten into collecting records too, she likes to pick up vintage jazz LPs (Blue Note/Impulse). So we often go record shopping together. It's a fun thing to do when you are in a new city - a coffeeshop, a record store and a brewpub and my Saturday is complete.

	11:48am E: When I managed a record store I would have fun playing all the cool stuff that had been banished to the dollar bin, just to prove to people that market value was not a reliable measurement for quality
	11:48am Mike W: Amanda P’s book is really good. Duane did work at Other Music and was always such a good presence there. Scott Mou too. These are people who converse comfortably with anyone interested in any types of music. They also had many employees who were less comfortable in conversation, on music or perhaps any subject, and when someone is shopping for music they’re often, in small ways, looking for some affirmation (perhaps since there are so many choices). Without a friendly, garrulous person helping someone pick a record or ring them up, that affirmation may seem absent. So maybe the shopper buys the record in their hand but comes away feeling like they didn’t earn the approval (of a dude at the store) for their purchase, and they find the overall experience slightly aversive, and don’t go back as frequently. Other Music in no way had a monopoly on diffident record-store employees, but since it was clearly seen (and self-appointed really) as Manhattan Indie Record Store No. 1, examples of weird vibes from employees there might have stuck out more. So many great records bought there and at the Tower across the street.
	11:49am TDK60: I get testy with pushy record hunters. They elbow in right as you try to start a row. This happens at the WFMU record fair too. They're usually men.
	11:49am morphe': Sadly for some musicians ... I stopped buying records in 198? when I discovered WFMU .. I did fund folks through many gigs...The last record I bought 1986? was THE NIHILIST SPASM BAND at the NEW MUSIC EXCHANGE ... Had heard them on Tony Coulter's WKCR show...

	11:54am Paul in the OC: LIvely discussion re music stores & collecting, topics the wife and I talk about on long trips for a LONG time. The psychology of collecting is yet another good PhD thesis. I recall the young male collector instinct to be a replacement for human contact and certainly opposite sex contact, so the average record dude did end up fairly antisocial. A young woman who drops into this atmos is likely to find it pretty off putting, which is not to say that I have not met plenty of lady record collectors, and they are typically pretty socialized, so there’s a distinction for ya. Meanwhile, here’s a lady collector dropping a great playlist so fooey on all that testosterone collector stuff!
