Is the frog a grogger? A frogger?
  12:06pm
Listener Robert:

So you play the frog by spinning it? Is that like the noisemaker I was spinning yesterday for somebody's birthday?
Avatar 12:07pm
TDK60:

Hello David in London. Clicky percussion frog. Got it.
  12:07pm
Listener Robert:

The thing I was spinning could be called a gregger, but I think that might be a general name for hand-held noisemakers that doesn't specify the mechanism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm

I only know about groggers/greggers because of Nachum Segal's playing Purim tracks during his drive-time reign!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm
Irene Trudel:

Hey TDK60, Sylvia, Robert, annie, james and melinda! Thanks for naming those instruments. The Glockenspiel is actually a Xylophone in its own case (a nice garage sale find). I don't know what the frog percussion instrument is called, but the rod pulls out of the body and you rub it along its back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
Webhamster Henry:

In that show, Andes Manta does a credible simulation of a rainforest.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm
David (in London):

With the frog, you remove the playing stick / stylus that's shown there in 'stored position', and run it down the bumps on the frog's spine. It makes a very pleasant clicky sound.

Good morning-ish, Irene! So great hearing your extra show on Saturday. Just what we needed! x
  12:14pm
Listener Robert:

Thanks, David, when I saw it I guessed that was how it was played. I've heard many music recordings with a thing like that scratching out a beat.

As to the grogger, it seems the Wikipedia entry would have it as specific to the ratchet style I was "playing" yesterday. But I thought it could also apply to a maraca-like item with loose things rattling around in a resonant vessel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Webhamster Henry:

We're doing a shorter version of it Oct 2nd at Mettabee farm, if anyone is near Columbia County NY then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16pm

We call those things Frog Guiros, or rasps (or both, or just frogs). There are other animals also used sometimes.

Irene, a xylophone rather than glockenspiel! Will have to look up the difference. [?] /After/ I research all the other notes from all of today's WFMU shows I've saved, to look into more. (Busy guy I am.)
