Hey Handy. Good thank you. This is the week that I'm driving around Essex (the New Jersey of England) in an ice cream van, with a film crew in tow. Oh the mighty Specimen. We used to have an early Saturday morning kids show in the UK in the early 80s called Number 73. I found out later that the booker was heavily into goth and so all the bands made really unlikely appearances on the show. Including the Specimen, who were great.

Cha Cha, I feel very similarly at the moment,

Number 73 wasn't around in 1980, it was a few years later if memory serves. Joy Division played a cracking version of Love Will Tear Us Apart when they played a show in my home town just before their end (supported by Killing Joke!). I remember seeing the posters around town, but tragically I was just a bit too young to go. Sigh. (The recording of the gig was later included on the Still album).

Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@4:12 David (in London): you mean the Birmingham gig? Yes, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' was in their set already when they performed in Belgium/Netherlands, When speaking of that kids' show I forgot to say I meant the video Joy Division made for 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', where they actually performed it live in front of cameras (New Order did a similar one with Jonathan Demme for 'The Perfect Kiss'), too bad they replaced the original sound of that video with the single, so it is horribly out of sync.

Hey Handy, bird question for you: Sunday we were driving out of our community and a kind-of-confused egret flew across the intersection. We were maybe 1/4 mile from the river as the crow/egret flies. He was flying about windshield height and landed on a concrete median between the main road and exit lane. Besides the weird "flying in traffic" thing, something else we saw was that he had about a half-dozen light brown feathers. Have you seen either the weird flight pattern or brown feather things on an egret? Wondering if it was a lost juvenile or maybe a sick adult.

Amazing, James! We used to find some decent games in Brooklyn and had a friendly 0.25.0.50 NL game going for years but it fell apart. We have been playing a biweekly £0.05/£0.10 game over a nice, light web platform throughout the pandemic. It plays pretty big for the blinds! That last up until several of us got busy this summer and spanned NYC and the UK, mainly Scotland. Poker is the only thing that attracts me to Vegas. I only ever had one night of it at the Showboat in AC before it closed.

I'm fairly out of practice, too, but my friend in Edinburgh had been going to the casino there weekly since he moved in 2015 so is pretty damn sharp. I went once with him in 2019 on a visit and had a profitable evening, though I played super tight. It had been a while since I'd played with strangers, not to mention heavily accented (to my ears) strangers!

@Handy: Our game started at .25/.50 and played like a casino $1/$2. When we finally went to $.50/$1 it was like a $2/$5! Some extremely good players but also rich whales and drunks so if you picked your spot you could double up. Helped me clean up when the poker boom began bringing casual players into the Vegas and AC rooms.

If you (or anyone) ever makes it out to Vegas again, I hugely recommend a visit to Red Rock Canyon or the Springs Preserve. I managed to visit both last trip as well as the Mob Museum, because New Jerseyan. Next trip I hope to hit the Neon Museum and its graveyard.

Handy Haversack:

Fantastic, James, thanks for the tips! I hope we get to play together some day. I think Matt Warwick might also be a player. If you ever get a game together again, let me know!

Julie, I'm going to start cooking so will be away from the keyboard, but this has been great. Stay safe and strong and know that we'll miss you while you're in the belly of the beast. It'll be a thrill to once again hear the music of the Dark Night. Thanks so much!

Later on, Dark Ones. Stay Ensouled!

This might be the Doors' least embarassing album.

I love their first one (the doors)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

doors w/ Jimbo never made an album that wasn't indispensable. Some were better than others... mainly depending on getting the Production right...

Julie:

there was one I really didn't like... maybe Morrison Hotel?
Avatar 🦇 6:49pm
Julie:

no, I think it's Soft Parade that left me cold
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

How is the doors' debut album not one of the Best Albums Ever by anybody? Certainly far-reaching influence. I'd say soft parade is a little over-cooked. But still great. & not every track in their catalog is equal.
Avatar 🦇 6:51pm
Julie:

it's very trendy to hate on the doors, I don't get it myself. of course I grew up during the big resurgence, had him hanging on my wall

i have the record without Jim but I've never listened to it
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I get it. They're KlassickRawk & too many are into them for the wrong reasons - or in the wrong way maybe. I blame Corporate Media for making us hate Klassick Rawk acts by over-exposing there or four trax by anybody & neglecting the rest.

the early goths were definitely Morrison fans
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 6:55pm

Oh hell - Bowie, Iggy, Alice - I'd venture Ozzy are all doors enthusiasts. Let alone Bunnymen & Mazzy & MaryChain...
