I think the story was the TomTom Club was in the studio - but still didn't have lyrics ? So they just started riffing about this problem with Words ??...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm

Tom Tom Club probably the sign Hip Hop had gone mainstream.

I'm happy to hear you enjoyed your trip!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm

That was when it seemed to gain traction. There was a track, How We Gonna Make the Black Nation Rise? in 1980, which is pretty terrific
Avatar 8:42pm
tim abdellah:

The vocal "Come On, Get Down" from this West Street Mob track was sampled in Public Enemy's "Fight The Power"

I'll call you after the show, Mom -- I'll be stepping out for a coke or some ice cream, I think

I did once have a friend from Georgia school me when I complained about the humidity in NewHampshuh...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm

Yes! One of the joys of doing this is that that isn't the only track where I heard a PE sample -- although I don't think I wound up being able to use the other one I caught this week

I recently got the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip Hop and Rap. Haven't opened it yet. Song list is one point but it has a couple of essays and photos, wonder if any revelations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
schmutz:

yay Gary! sneakin in late, but will catch up in the archive..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm
Gary:

Schmutz! Oh, man, WR, I'm curious about that one
Avatar 9:34pm
still b/p:

And wonder what pre-1985 hip hop artists woulda thought if someone told them there'd someday be a Smithsonian Anthology. Would they have said "Of course!" or "You sure?" or "No way," or would they laugh at the seeming incongruity of something so fundamantally street being surveyed and formatted in a decidedly non-street and arguably fusty-dusty realm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
Gary:

still b/p!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
doctorjazz:

WR, I actually just saw that Smithsonian anthology today somewhere-found it amazing they did it, but, hey, hip hop is mainstream music (my daughter listens to much).
White Lines...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
doctorjazz:

I'm sure those early Hip Hop artists would have thought you were nuts!
(Would Robert Johnson have expected to be in anthologies?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
doctorjazz:

This is SUCH FUN (but my neck is getting sore from all the bopping)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm
Gary:

I remember dancing to this in clubs in San Francisco in the early 80s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm
Gary:

Hey You! Stick around after this for Sam Segal's If You Lose Your Horse. Tonight's episode "Horse Mego (RIP Peter Rehberg)" wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:47pm
still b/p:

Love for an artist to write a track, "Where You Gonna Put Me, Professor?"
Of course it makes perfect sense for authors or institutions to explore and document all things cultural and historical, and hip-hop is historically/culturally huge, but there's something nearly comical in the oil-and-water aspect sometimes.
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:54pm
WR:

Ha ha Doc, some muscles that you've not exercised recently. I feel you, as they say.
Avatar 9:58pm
tim abdellah:

That was hella fresh, Gary! Have a fly night everyone!!
Avatar 🇰🇷 Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
WR:

The song list of the anthology can be reviewed online. I'm wondering about the book. It is a collaboration with a few of the early hip hop guys being contributors. Will report back.

Thank you Gary. Onward.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm
