A live, improvised sound collage experiment, going back 28 years, weaving mesmerizing new soundscapes from found and collected materials right in the present moment.
Pop music, speeches, live phone calls and spontaneous monologues become ambient loopy layered threads riding the liminal spaces between waking and dreaming. [On hiatus.] (Visit homepage.)

Buckled up, ready to go wherever you take us Ken.

Hi, this one's never been unearthed before. I don't know what it will be but my notes say yay, yes, do it, so...finally, after 9 years:

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This was the very first regular bi-weekly slot in this new era, after 7 years of touring and fill-ins.

Feels analogous to witnessing the DJ talent coming back to the studio after covid exile

I think that's maybe a sample from Xanadu

This is Spandau Ballet. Hmm maybe I should be trying to playlist this somehow.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Hopeless, this is too many shows within shows
Avatar 3:22pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

This is the Windows 95 sound...by Brian Eno? And bug calling on the phone. And Panda Bear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
drowsy:

It is good to hear the Panda Bear intro phrases. Nice blend overall!

Thanks. This one had stayed buried because of audio recording quality issues. But, content, the content shines. Let it free.

Kenzo, as long as we're here, is this a good place to ask whether you'd consider formatting the comments on all the playlist pages in the style of Soundcloud, wherein if someone is streaming the archive, the comment gets synchronized with it? Or would that be either too much work or against the spirit of commenting on WFMU?
Avatar 3:33pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I've wanted to shift it to that since the late 2000's. Station hasn't wanted that, wants to emphasize focus on live.
Avatar 3:34pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I want a highlighter to move around the comments and songs when you're playing back an archive, all on one page.

Listener Robert:

OK, thanks. -Ken did explain recently in conversation on air with Mark Hurst his philosophy of the comment threading.

Ken, I am curious if you do dataviz stuff as well as the db and sonic output. I've been messing around on observablehq.com and wonder how far you take that medium. (on preview - Hi Robert, funny that we are both inspired to ask Ken tangential questions.)
Avatar 3:38pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

The commenting largely exists the way I first designed it in the mid-2000's, and hasn't changed in character except when avatars were added, and when I made it so new comments smoothly scroll into view. If any philosophy went into it starting out like this, it was the dial-up chat boards I grew up using. Also I insisted nobody should be required to log in first, which bucked the trend and I think has been key to uptake.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

@drowsy I avoid diving into sonic tech much, and like to maintain the analog mixing character of my live-collage approach.

Jello Biafra, speaking somewhere...maybe the Hackers On Planet Earth conference in early 2000's. I was recently thinking I should sample my own HOPE panel on a show, forgot I have a recording...

As to this platform and commenting... I have seen a handful of DJs using the platform to rerun an older show but use live comments with us. One DJ described the experience as a refreshing break. This platform is granting us Jello Biafra and mental health improvement, which must be a first.

Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Jello Biafra boasted of never having used a computer, which I respected

They said, please play this over and over, since it was produced by the advertising industry and that's one of their tricks so you'd make their perfect devil agent and I said OK as long as it doesn't benefit me or anyone
