Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Just unpacked the car from a day trip and realized I am just in time for you-know-what.
The stream before the show is making me wonder whether it would be possible to do a total yodeling Acid Jazz Hands.
Avatar 🎭 7:01pm
Listener Gregory:

Whoops, Edwin Drood is half the volume of the prior stream... if that.

Hi all!

WR:

Hi AJH aficionados, I'm am a tried and true failure at yodeling.

Yes, LG, and seems half the volume of another stream, yes I am double streaming.
Avatar 🎭 7:06pm
Listener Gregory:

For the record, I would prefer to be beaten 1 to the bar. Or less, if possible.
Howdy, @doctorj!

Interestingly, the Victor Hugo novel behind this is superb, but the Dickens novel behind Edwin Drood is clearly his weakest. A musical sending it up is called for.

"The failure of the musical was so total that it compelled the Nederlander Organization to finally sell the beloved but flop-prone Mark Hellinger Theatre to the Times Square Church, which still owns it.[2]"
Avatar 7:34pm

Every time I pass the Times Square Church and I'm with someone I tell them the tale of the Mark Hellinger

The film Grand Hotel is a true classic. Apparently, this is where Greta Garbo intones, "I want to be alone!" (for those over 40 who remember such things).
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:51pm

Filichia makes a pretty good joke in the table of contents when he lists the biggest hit of 1988-89 as "My Marriage to Ernest Borgnine," which turns out to be a blank page in Ethel Merman's biography!

@Gregory: Of course, it ends with everyone holding hands under a rainbow ;)

This version of the song does not top the Fred Astaire version, IMHO. Fortunately, the 1993 Broadway audiences probably didn't know/remember that. His performance is much livelier.

I revere Chita Rivera, love the Kiss of the Spider Woman movie, but this Gimme Love is not connecting for me.

Short used to do musical send-ups on the Letterman show pretty regularly (usually pretty funny). I think if you subtracted the send-up, he might have been able to do the musical on its own.

I give up. Been trying to say that last week, the music was low and mic hot (but apparently normal, compared to next show on Drummer stream). Looks like this week started out low, also, but I wasn't here at 7 tonight.

@LG, I think it is the song from Musicality of Strouse
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
TonyR:

Yeah it was all good seated at the computer, not so good cast to the big speakers... In the bedroom.
Avatar 🎭 8:15pm
Listener Gregory:

@WR, yikes! Oh, the song was originally in a failed Nick 'n' Nora musical and then got put into the Strouse collection? That would make sense.
Avatar 8:15pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

to elaborate on what irritates me about the added dialogue here- ashman's lyrics PERFECTLY illustrate the fact that they're falling in love, we don't need a bunch of dialogue to help it along
