“I’m an outsider by choice, but not truly.
It's the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I'd rather be in, in a good system. That's where my discontent comes from: being forced to choose to stay outside."

I haven’t been on FarceBook literally for years. Probably the top thing I resent most about its insidiousness is that has rendered anyone who chooses to not engage as persona non grata, as if we don’t exist. I could go on and on and on about how demonically exploitative and damaging it has been. But I mainly wanted you to hear the Carlin quote. Because I think many of us here probably feel similarly.

Other than streaming WFMU and checking out some music related web-sites, I have found that the noise and jibber jabber of the internet really gets me down. I have found that most of the information that is presented to me is completely irreleveant to my life. At the end of last year I made the decision to stop looking at news sites - Washington Post, NYT and The Guardian. I now pick up a print newspaper 3-4 times a week to stay current. I really feel so much better.

There was some other mark knophler song that he got some static for where he wrote from the perspective of a gay man. Someone else here may know what I'm talking about I'm pretty sure I heard it on wfmu and that's what prompted the research.

Anyway it's an interesting and contentious topic. Like I don't think it should be off limits for an artist to attempt a perspective they don't actually have the background for. Alot of people seem to think it should be.

Interesting dialogue here about social media. For my two cents, I've found it's quite comparable to other forms of addictive behavior. It can have real benefits when used in moderation - maintaining connection, promoting causes, getting exposed to new ideas. But like so many other crutches and distractions we can abuse it, which is when it becomes a problem. I get a lot out of facebook, Instagram, a few other platforms, as long as I stay conscious of my use and don't overdo it.

I do in fact worry that my dopamine is too tangled up with FMU ! But that's as much about me as FMU... Music & Culture Matter - & - so does Community. FMU delivers all of these like nothing else. It really does.
The difference is FMU - whatever its organizational quirks & specifics - is Listener Supported : it ain't selling our data or identities (on the contrary) - & it's more or less transparent: we know a good bit of what's happening & who does it. The Tech Monopolies are the least in all these virtues... SheilaB well summed up.

@Gurldoggie - it is of course, technically. But somehow WFMU seems to sit in an alternate universe, compared to nearly all social media platforms. Part of that comes from the fact that it's tiny... and that as a "price of admission" one has to "sit through" a barrage of delightful, enlightening, soul-enriching sounds that for most other people would be... just noise (or "not what I'm used to")

WFMU is great because it adheres to that, social media platforms just bombards you with signals, constantly, which is bad and alters you in a more cronenberg way that you can image. @ncjay - it was nice of you to write to Flora Purim while she was in jail. When I went to jail I wasn't even using drugs but within a few weeks I learned everything there is to know about heroin. I would have to guess that 90 percent of the prisoners used heroin inside that jail. Three girls on my tier took overdoses and I learned how to pump their hearts to tty to get them going again. Then I would have to go back to my cell and lie down and fly off into my head simply so I would not mad.

“What kept me going? Partly the knowledge of what could do after I got out, but most of all the letters. In the 18 months I was in the jail I got 10,000 letters, from Europe and Japan, all over the world. They gave me the hope I needed to live through this thing. At least that part of it was beautiful.”
