A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

This was just the morning tonic I needed. Had just been ruminating that I live in a part of NYC that pre-pandemic was one of the only spots which hadn’t a pedestrian plaza, has the corniest summer lineup of shitty 80’s cover bands and bad mainstream movies, and its biggest supermarket has an entire wall of frozen pizzas - ugh (for real)!
I give thanks for this place all the time. But today it is an especially soothing salve and saving my sanity. Thanks all!

>>> In the liner notes to Outro Tempo—a beguiling and dizzying assemblage of fourteen Brazilian experimental and fusion artists from around the time of that country’s thawing—producer John Gómez remembers happening upon Marco Bosco’s 1983 album Metalmadeira in a British thrift shop and finding a handwritten note within: “Dear Mr. Eno, I would like you to know about our work, we work with tapes and sounds of Nature.”

@yeti love that story.
Had woken with insomnia and went back to reading a story about Adrian Belew’s wild ride from Midwest obscurity to hurtling into Zappa’s world, then on to Bowie and to the Talking Heads.
Brian Eno, of course, figured in a lot of that trajectory.

It's interesting that Belew played on so many other artists' hits, but his own records were never very popular. Kind of like Phil Manzanera. Better player than songwriter, perhaps.

Zinn The Mood:

@yeti Belew had been on my radar with Crimson, Zappa, etc. But his solo stuff in the early 90’s and with The Bears were really great testaments to his strength as a songwriter with a great sense of melody and songwriting craftsmanship. Prior I had mainly thought of him as a hired hand, avant-garde, soundscape artist. That solo record (I think) with “May 1, 1990” on it was revelatory to that regard.

For learning Portuguese, Spanish or any language: to the extent that there is a "magic key" it is that the learning will happen as much as in your *body* -- and in your muscle memory of interactions with *real* people out in the modern world -- as in your "mind" (that is, your explicit memory of words and rules and such). This is why techniques based mostly on drilling and memorization (while they will be a part of your greater strategy) -- i.e. what most apps do for you -- have only limited benefit.

Trouble, Duolingo is the best free resource I've tried. I started basic French with a book + CD course called Assimil, but what really helped to make spoken French intelligible was listening to French radio. Most courses teach you formal, well pronounced versions of a language, but that's not usually how they are spoken "on the street"

So I would recommend: (1) don't worry too much about vocabulary or grammar at first. Start with *pronunciation*. Which also has a lot of "grammar" and little rules to it but the point is you start practicing it with not just your ears and mouth but in fact your vocal chords and breath and posture and facial expressions (which are used in subtley different ways in different parts of the world). And pay attention to the rhythm, melody (or lack thereof) and the arc of *intonation* across words (how it rises and falls, depending whether you are asking a question, introducing a subject, etc).

Lisboner Pascal (France):

  10:58am
headcleaner:

And (2): get out there and talk to *real* people (who are native speakers of that language... or even a related language) as much as you can. Doesn't matter what you talk about - it can just be ¡Hola!, "Encantado", "Muchas gracias por su ayuda", whatever -- the point is you are *connecting* with people instead of just doing exercises in your head. And while you're doing so, pay close attention to every sound... what are the "o" and "a" sounds in ¡Hola!, for example? Are they the same as in "No" or "apple"? Where are the stresses (and does there seem to be a general rule for where they usually are in a Spanish word)? What kind of "r" was that "gracias" and was it the same as in "por", etc? And what's with the "c" in gracias and the "d" in Encantado - they sound the same as in English, but are they?

... the point of all that sweating (initially) over the details of pronunciation is not that you need to be completely perfect at it before you talk to anybody... but once you show people you are at least *meeting them half way* the doors of communication blow wide open -- people will just start lighting up, telling you their life stories, sharing their musical tastes, inviting you to come visit (that's not typical of course but it does happen). Just for saying "Encantado" in the proper tone of voice.

@Threemoons - I agree that rote drilling (whether from apps or other techniques) can definitely give you a leg-up. That was pretty much all we did during my 4 years of HS French, after which my abilities for dealing with the real, spoken language were quite limited. But once I finally hit the streets in Paris (many years later) all of that "Je la lui ai donnée" (and all the other crazy word-ordering rules) came in quite handy. It was just *there*, ready to slot in.

Frank Zaatar:

I am currently learning Yiddish on Duolingo and I am finding ti a lot of fun. The only thing is that Duolingo doesn't give you any grammar rules--at least for Yiddish. So I have to find a grammar to read along with it.

I've been binging on Call My Agent. It's a workout reading and listening at the same time.

We have Annette Peacock and Catherine Ringer in the same set - what would happen if they were in the same room?

The public school system here has a dual-language immersion program. Admission is by lottery, and Little Human didn't win a slot.

zeca alfonso is amazing! his voice singing Grandola on the radio pretty much responsible for the manifestation of the carnation revolution. i like verde sao os campos.

Annette Peacock has done little pre-show talks - so it's entirely possible

TerrDE: a Russian tutor helped me get over a major stumbling block to learning that language - that Russian speakers are *really saying* all the sounds, especially the vowels. Whereas we Americans just kind of let them fall out of our mouthes

TerrDE: Yes, I saw the "7-headed Beast" version of KC, I thought it was FANTASTIC, I loved the 3 drummers out front (RIP Bill Rieflin) and I actually preferred the Jakko Jakszyk lineup to the Belew years. I was not a fan of the last few records KC did with Belew, and I think Jakko is better suited to the band.

@Fernando - sorry to hear that you say that (I take it you're from the RF), though unfortunately I do hear that from Brazilians a lot. But really... "Gilead"? Is it that bad, these days? Nunca estive, mas realmente quero visitar...
