War is sort of forgotten? Didn't realize. The march of time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Funky16Corners:

Not necessarioy buy music heads, but the general public has little to know awareness of them, especially considering how many hits they had

Erica Burdon's journey from the bars of Newcastle to fronting WAR is a pretty wild one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
Funky16Corners:

ERIC (cannot type this afternoon)...sheesh
Avatar 3:24pm
TDK60:

They were all over radio back then. And I recall War was a good conversation starter between blacks and whites too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
Funky16Corners:

They were #97 in Billboards Top 200 R&B acts in the 1940s-1988 refence book, LOTS of hits
Avatar 3:27pm
Erica:

Didn't know Eric Burdon FORMED War let alone be part of the band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
Funky16Corners:

I wouldn't say he "formed" WAR. He borrowed them for a few years. He also brought Lee Oskar with him, which is important
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:29pm
Funky16Corners:

This is one of the great grooves ever laid into vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Funky16Corners:

Listening to a track like All Day Music, they have a lot in common with bands like El Chicano and Malo.
Avatar 3:34pm
TDK60:

Yeah, Larry I've always thought of War as a true Los Angeles band.

Matt from New Orleans:

Larry for some reason when I was listening to slippin’ today I was noticing that Bob Marley must have been a fan. I was noticing similarities to Get Up Stand Up. I feel like I’ve had those thoughts before but it came up again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - There is a healthy dose of reggae running through WAR's music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Phillippe:

howdy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm
Funky16Corners:

Hey Phillippe!
Avatar 3:41pm
TDK60:

Matt, I wouldn't be surprised. I've long thought those later Marley and Tosh albums were hybrid reggae with a lot of other elements from R&B, rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Funky16Corners:

Well, most of Jamaican music of the 60s is heavily informed by American R&B and soul. Jamaicans were listening to AM radio from New Orleans and Florida.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
Funky16Corners:

Oh yeah, thanks to Cal Zone for the pic at the top of the playlist page!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Funky16Corners:

@Matt - Me too! I was saying to Jen the other day that this is one of those songs that is forever attached to a movie scene, like ELO's 'Living Thing' and the end of 'Boogie Nights'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm

And 'What A Wonderful World' by Sam Cooke in Animal House

Larry, was Eric B still with War on these later hits or just at the beginning?
Avatar 4:01pm
Erica:

Low Rider, aka the theme tune to George Lopez.
Avatar 4:02pm
TDK60:

Wait! This is the greatest groove known to Terrans.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Funky16Corners:

I think this is why I saved it for the end of the set.

Yeah Candy, Eric got them rolling and they took off!

@Candy-O - Eric was out by 1971

That's what I was thinking, he had already left!

David Shortell:

How involved was Jimi Hendrix' death in Burdon's departure from War? He only touches on it his 1986 autobiography "I Used To Be An Animal, But I'm Alright Now". I never did read his second more comprehensive autobio from 2001: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood: A Memoir".
Avatar 4:10pm
SquigY0:

Jon Secada?! oh yeah, he's annoying :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Funky16Corners:

@David - It's hard to tell. Jimi and Eric were close, but there is so much BS and apocraypha, and legend building and straight up BS surrounding Jimi's death that it's hard to know for sure
