Interesting about the spiciness there, Paulo. I'd have thought stuff there would have a nice kick to it. Sounds a bit like Cuba: you'd think that the country that produces some of the world's hottest peppers would have spicy cuisine, but nope, it's famous in Latin America for not being spicy.

niacinamide (as well as b-6, but it's easy to have enough b-6 from your diet) is necessary for body to convert tryptophan into seratonin.

i used 5-hydroxytryptophan for a while in the 90s, when my insomnia was much worse. it helped a little. straight up tryptophan worked much better...though some say it's rough on the liver

@Mike W I do. Tried melatonin and it had the opposite effect. It made me restless. 5-Hydro eases the anxiety enough to help me slow my mind down making it easier to fall asleep. I also stay asleep a bit longer which is essential for physical recovery.

I taught myself to sleep by listening to a detuned radio white noise. & allowed all my troubling thoughts, worries & fears to speak at once in my mind. Then let it all merge as white noise, which eventually I could not hear any longer. I would be asleep without knowing it.

Don't know about all these herbs and chemicals. But my anti-anxiety strategy consists of: (1) aggressive maintenance of sleep hygiene (2) regular exercise (in my case yoga) (3) eating right always always (4) philosophical training ("therapy" if you will) to counteract the various toxic ideologies (consumerism, meritocracy, etc) that are designed to make us miserable and passive; and - very important - (5) dialing alcohol way, way down (that's how alcohol works, basically: by creating and magnifying the anxieties it supposedly relieves you from for a small part of the day). Oh and ditching social media (many years ago) in favor of the far more intrinsic creative and social offerings provided by the mighty fortress that is our FMU (and live music out in the wilds, otherwise)
