Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Adam!
Hi everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm
Feldpausch:

I certainly like what was happening in Amsterdam in the 60's. I mean I "dig it"
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Jan Turkenburg:

:-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm

I'm finding reports that 11.5% of Netherlands is fully vaccinated, with 33% having one dose, so looks like it's picking up
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I'm trying something new, which is slightly riskful. Let me know if any drop out occurs in the coming 5 minutes

Altered Beets:

Time to get Zwolle, bro. Do you even lift crates and crates of records, bro?

Hey Jan !! Afternoon all.

Free dutch word
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, it's both: 'Ik zie het' (I see it) AND "Het Nederlandse woord" (The Dutch Word)
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Jan Turkenburg:

but it's "DE Nederlandse woorden" (The Dutch words, plural)"
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm
Jan Turkenburg:

and "DE winkel" (The shop)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
MHLee:

I tried about a week on online Dutch once... just close enough to German and English to be confusing
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Jan Turkenburg:

hahahaha, true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm

I have a running list to assemble my letter to Jersey City, including learning about Dutch politics and recently Liberation Day

Domenic:

I should do a letter too... In a way WFMU has been educational.. very similar to those Swedish or German educational films were to youngsters in the 60's....LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
MHLee:

I can see why Golden Earring did so well. They are just a great band all around.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I truly believe WFMu has been/ is being more educational than just that, Domenic
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Ah Yes! and this is such a good song. Thanks Jan.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

that sax!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm
Jan Turkenburg:

And I mean that as an advanced degree music education professional.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Freeform radio is educational in itself, wouldn't you agree?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm
MHLee:

I agree. I'm also going to make sure to include something about the attempt to highlight marginalized and overlooked groups.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Paper Kosmonaut:

Gotta go, sorry! have fun y'all. Thanks for the Kecks, Jan.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:13pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Wow, you chose your window right, PK!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
Jan Turkenburg:

I actually did my graduation paper on the educational possibilities of radio. So this issue triggers me. I actually did research on this and did an effort thought it through.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Jan Turkenburg:

It so happens that one of my points was that interaction with the listeners enhances the educational value of the medium. One of my suggestions was (internet just peeking round the corner in the 90s) to combine radio with a chatroom for instance...
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Jan Turkenburg:

So I really enjoy what's happening sometimes on thursdays on 'Sounds under 64 not allowed'. We're teaching each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
MHLee:

I wrote a term paper on how Appalachian folk music allows us to hear bits of voices otherwise not documented. For example, Black voices who often recorded the same songs or were the origin of the songs, but not recorded due to systematic discrimination of the recording industry.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
Jan Turkenburg:

And that's one example of education, right here MHLee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
MHLee:

change that first recorded to played... i was thinking about who are recorded to have played.

But yes, I agree!
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:21pm
Jan Turkenburg:

We're getting enthusiatic about the music and are motivated to tell each other what we know, do research as we chat...
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm
Jan Turkenburg:

On the b-side are a few commercials for which the music was composed by Marian de Garrica.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
MHLee:

I would know far less about my family’s own history as Yiddishists in the Wilno area if it was not for the recordings of Daniel Kahn. His music and its avert messages lead me to understand the history of the area and the old country my great-great-grandfather had left behind in 1900.

And so you can pass on those insights to future generations.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Meanwhile I have to say it was pretty tough to find a picture of an visibly old broodrooster...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm
MHLee:

Never would have gone digging without realizing one of the subjects of a song was born in the same village
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
MHLee:

I actually guessed the meaning before seeing the image.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, I think this wasn't such a tough one, but if you google 'vintage'or 'old'or 'dirty' broodrooster, even then all you get is adds and I don't have such a toaster myself.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm

A highly hip, modern go go dancers psychedelic music show on Dutch TV 1965-1969
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
MHLee:

I wish there was a tv channel just for running old music programs. The closest things I've seen are 10 hour blocks of hee-haw and concert tv.
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
Jan Turkenburg:

There is, or used to be on on Dutch TV, but those are just compiled snippets, not complete shows, In the first weeks of the lockdown, last year Paul Haenen took the initiative to re-run complete TV-shows live on Youtube. It was called Troost TV (Comfort TV)
Avatar 🦝 Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Jan Turkenburg:

And I read that recent research shows that nostalgia liturally is good for the brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
MHLee:

Adding that to a list of things to check out.. don't personally recommend ten hours of hee-haw for the brain haha
