Lennington H. Shewell (theremin) & Allan McIver (piano) | You're Driving Me Crazy | 1930 | In 1920, the theremin was accidentally invented by a Russian scientist named Lev Sergeyevich Termen (AKA Leon Theremin). Working at the Physical Technical Institute in Petrograd, he noticed that something odd happened when he hooked up audio circuits to an electrical device called an oscillator in a certain configuration. The oscillator produced an audible tone when he held his hands near it, and he could shift the tone just by waving his hands back and forth. A classically trained cellist, Termen was immediately intrigued. Termen showed the device to his superiors and delivered the first concert with his device soon after. He followed with a private demonstration for Lenin in 1922, who was apparently intrigued by the strange device, the theremin or etherphone, as it was originally called. For more on Theremin's life, check out the book "Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage" by Albert Glinsky. | 1:59:50 (Pop-up)

"Mycellium" borrowed from New Latin, from myc- (from base of Greek mykēt-, mýkēs "mushroom." Term was introduced by the Austrian botanist & mycologist Leopold Trattinnick (1764-1849) in "Fungi Austriaci..." (Vienna, 1804). Trattinnick, who uses the word throughout the work, gives no indication of its derivation. His translation in the parallel vernacular columns is Schwammgewächs, literally, "mushroom growth." | * | 2:26:00 (Pop-up)
Kosmischer Läufer | Morgenröte (Dawn) | The Secret Cosmic Music of the East German Olympic Program 1972-83, Vol. 2 | Unknown Capability Recordings | 2014 | comp / originally composed in 1977 / Although this hasn’t been verified and is said by some to be a complete hoax, supposedly this is the background story: In East Germany in the early 1970’s Martin Zeichnete worked as a sound editor for DEFA, (Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft), the state-owned film studio. Like many young East Germans of the time he would listen furtively to West German radio at night and became infatuated with the Kosmische Musik or ‘Krautrock’. Martin, a keen runner, hit upon the idea of using the repetitive, motorik beats of this new music as a training aid for athletes. He thought it could benefit the mind as well as the body with the pulsing, hypnotic music bringing focus. A ‘borrowed’ prototype of Andreas Pavel’s Stereobelt showed Martin the technology to provide music on the move already existed and could easily be adapted for runners. After sharing his concept with colleagues Martin was taken from his studio to East Berlin, quizzed by the authorities about his ideas and, was surprised to find himself put to work by the Nationales Olympisches Komitee immediately. Installed in a Berlin studio with the few electronic instruments the state could supply, (Martin asked for a Moge but was refused), he began this journeys in music. Known by Martin and his fellow musicians informally as ‘Projekt Kosmischer Läufer’ (Cosmic Runner). | 2:35:10 (Pop-up)

light as the figure
dark as the shadow
they go together like the man I am is on a journey with the man in the dream passing by thru life qquella vita fatta di chiaroscuro
“I would remind you O Painter! To dress your figures in the lightest colors you can, since, if you put them in dark colors, they will be in too slight relief and inconspicuous from a distance. And this is because the shadows of all objects are dark. And if you make a dress dark there is little variety between the lights and shadows, while in light colors there will be greater variety.” would have written Leonardo da Vinci
