Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...some Motown Hits may be overexposed - but they were not fooling around !...
Bass *still* kinda underrated in significance - as kind of a general statement...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Funky16Corners:

The irony is, that despite the obvious greatness of his work. Whitfield was a major source of friction at Motown. He had to hit the charts to convince Gordy of his value, and the Temps were pissed at him for stuff like this, which were largely instrumental
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

But isn't this a common tale ? Motown was this Motor City Hit Factory - & 'special editions' had to buck the assembly line... TheBeatles getting high coupled with white-coated British Empire engineers is a common analogy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
Funky16Corners:

Though, it says something that if you look at the back cover of this album, there's a tiny pic of the Temps, and a huge pic of Whitfield www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...unusually transparent...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm
Funky16Corners:

@RRN63 - Yes indeed. A lot of the really visionary stuff at Motown happened in spite of the direction of the label. I was watching a rerun of the Ed Sullivan show and the Four Tops were doing this awful, supper club act and Gordy was all about that shit. Trying to sell his product to Mom and Dad, when the kids were his main audience
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Funky16Corners:

I mean, who the fuck needs to see the Supremes sing 'Mame' on Ed Sullivan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - Ed *was* for the whole family... & he was the Big Time when there were like three channels...
The Culture however was moving on...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm
Funky16Corners:

True that. It's interesting, on that same album cover, ALL of the musicians get credit. Very unusual for a Motown album.

TDK I lived in SantaBarbara 16 years - & 'Quratz' rawked my head ! The relation of L.A. & Noir - that's ne thing. & putting the System above Humans & Habitation is another ! Relates to things both MarkHurst has touched on (what are Humans *for* ??) - & SheilaB, if she more in reference to NYC. But Gentriication & Corporatization ...as happened to FM radio. Yeah.

TDK@12:59 City of Quartz is a knowing unravel and examination of the sprawling mess that is Los Angeles. A lot has happened since the book came out, but it still happens to be the go-to book if you want to understand this place.

Hi, Larry! Sounding great!
+1 for City of Quartz! Great book. Before I ever visited LA it helped give a story and a sense of place to what was allegedly a placeless city, a place beyond what is depicted in television and movies.

I don't remember the title of the more recent book about the gentrification of NYC SheilaB was talking about... Yes ! 'Quartz' has historical perspective too - the roots of the thing... Lynch I think illuminates this quality of SoCal in another way.

This is a complicated place by any measure. I have the perspective of a native who's lived here their entire life, and there's still things I have trouble comprehending.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
Funky16Corners:

The last time I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, there was the scene where Brad Pitt picks up the hitchhiker, and made mention of where she was trying to go (Spahn Ranch) so I looked it up on a map and I was surprised how spread out LA is. Places that I assumed were right next to each other were a long drive away

The West is Horizontal.
...Does anyone know exactly where L.A. begins & ends & what's included ??...
Obvious thing of our little NewEngland traps are built around Old World cemeteries
- but L.A. is a Highway...

I had the privilege of performing "Something Is Wrong" in a band I played in once, way back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

My only complaint against Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was the soundtrack. By using airchecks from KHJ, Tarintino missed the chance of a life time. In 1969 there were much better radio stations to plunder to create a sense of place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm
