A precocious pianist and flute player with the renowned jazz program at Locke, she got an opportunity to make records at a very early point in her career and the hit single "Forget Me Nots" made her a rising star---as a VOCALIST! I call it the "George Benson Effect." Being an instrumental virtuoso is fine, but opening your mouth to sing can make you a celebrity and a bit fatter in the wallet. Ms. Rushen has had a successful career both as a performer and as an educator and ambassador for the music. Good on her!

A precocious pianist and flute player with the renowned jazz program at Locke, she got an opportunity to make records at a very early point in her career and the hit single "Forget Me Nots" made her a rising star---as a VOCALIST! I call it the "George Benson Effect." Being an instrumental virtuoso is fine, but opening your mouth to sing can make you a celebrity and a bit fatter in the wallet. Ms. Rushen has had a successful career both as a performer and as an educator and ambassador for the music. Good on her!
