A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

We picked up a book about caracaras recently and it turns out the author is the singer from Shearwater. Had no idea. Can't recommend it yet, it's still unread. www.penguinrandomhouse.com...

I wish the Cornell Labs stuff didn't rely so much on Google and didn't ask for an e-mail address in order to ID more than one bird through its Merlin service. But the species info they publish as a "field guide" is great.

YB, sure -- but defaulting to having Google read your geo info and demanding an e-mail address to use a free ID service is one step past running on AWS, I'd say.
We have some white-throated sparrows hanging about, and current thinking is we have several of the genetic variants. Punk rock head stripes!

Long Covid is a real thing. Kind of like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which I didn't understand how hellish it was for people. If you know someone that is suffering from it stay in touch with them. Every little bit of love helps and gives us a reason to keep pushing.
Thx Handy!

We had a a major hibernaculum where I grew up. White nose pretty much did away with that though. I took my now wife there once years ago but only saw a few come out at dusk. We did experience our first screech owl that night. The memory of panic-googling "horse sound in woods at night" will live with me forever

@Andrea, she does, but there are a lot of ... issues? From the bureaucracy of the schools to lack of support from placing organizations to an atomized semi-freelance workforce that has no collective representation and a strained sense of collective identity. It's a hustle, all the time, and there's a lot of feast-or-famine to it. But also, YES, she does like it because the students need it and often respond and don't get what she does from any other source.
