Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I will swear on my mother's grave that Rhapsody in Blue was introduced on the concert stage and not in a musical. No?
Hi, Bronwyn, Andrew, and lurkers!
Avatar 🎭 7:08pm
Listener Gregory:

This is with Bernstein playing the piano parts, no?
Avatar 🎭 7:17pm
Listener Gregory:

Ferde Grofe is best known for writing The Grand Canyon Suite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm
Webhamster Henry:

Hi!orchestrate! Ferde was a busy guy! Also arranged King of Jazz Paul Whiteman.
Avatar 🎭 7:20pm
Listener Gregory:

Also, jazz composer/bandleader Willem Breuker wrote his own orchestration of Rhapsody because he didn’t like Grofe’s. I have heard it, but the original is so familiar to me, I just kept thinking, “This doesn’t sound right.”

Hi Andrew and Henry!!!

@Gregory: Yes Lenny on piano!!

Big Breuker fan here, LG, he can do no wrong by me.

Bronwyn Bishop:

hi doctorjazz!!!
Avatar 7:23pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

i know I'm just playing this to make a point about orchestrators, but if I ever write a lyric a tenth as good as this one I can die happy...I wish she'd written a musical
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
doctorjazz:

I have that Rhapsody in Blue be Breuker, but haven't heard it in a while.

@doctorj, I heard him live once. Incredibly entertaining group.

This is a remarkable song (Hazelwood/Sinatra).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm
Webhamster Henry:

I hope you get to Van Dyke Parks, the guy I think of when thinking of orchestration. And Morricone.
Avatar 7:33pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Gregory: I'm obsessed with the line "Remember me to no one, I was born this afternoon." I hope to have a moment like that in my life someday
Avatar 7:34pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Henry: Dammit I forgot Van Dyke. I love him. I've played him on the show before though. I didn't forget Ennio :)

Saw Breuker a few times, almost always a great show (the last time was not long before he passed, show lacked the manic energy of the previous ones)...even my no-fan-of-free-jazz wife had fun at one of the Kollektief concerts!
ELO!!!

Sebesky is also a big-band jazz arranger. I think he had some albums on CTI back in the day. I didn’t know about his Broadway arranging.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Webhamster Henry:

He orchestrated a piece of my friend Brian Woodbury on Brian’s new album. Brian is no orchestral slouch either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm
Webhamster Henry:

There’s also Hans Spialek, who did lots of musicals and kept a diary every day from 1912. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar 7:48pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

in case you're wondering why i'm playing this next one, it's because it was orchestrated by GERSHON KINGSLEY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm
Webhamster Henry:

Got any Cyranos or Hunchbacks this week?
Avatar 7:51pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

No, but I should have played something from the Disney Hunchback because its orchestrations are amazing
Avatar 🎭 7:58pm
Listener Gregory:

There is real orchestrating going on here (People Will Say), without an actual orchestra. Very nice.
Avatar 🎭 8:14pm
Listener Gregory:

Bronwyn, my orchestrations would make you laugh, but not in a good way.
Avatar 🎭 8:36pm
Listener Gregory:

This Titanic song is annoying me!
Avatar 8:40pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

but is it more annoying than my heart will go on?
Avatar 🎭 8:41pm
Listener Gregory:

Fortunately, I am not familiar with that song. I have led a sheltered life.

Give the orchestrator some!
Avatar 9:01pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

thank YOU gregory and thank you orchestrators!!!!
Avatar 🎭 9:02pm

Hamlisch benefited greatly from the New England Conservatory’s ragtime band, which initiated the revival. My understanding is that the producers asked Gunther Schuller (the band leader and expert in early jazz) to score the film, but he declined.

thx Bronwyn. I have been entertained :)
