April 16, 2021: It's got that swing
This radio show denounces explicit and implicit racism. It condemns the culture of White supremacy, which enables the brutalization of Black people and other communities of color. It supports Black Lives Matter and the movement it stands for. |

Old man sunshine, listen you
Don't you tell me dreams come true
Just try it, and I'll start a riot
Beatrice Fairfax, don't you dare
Ever tell me, he will care
I'm certain, it's the final curtain
I never wanna hear
From any cheerful Pollyannas
Who tell you Fate supplies a mate
It's all bananas
They're writing songs of love
But not for me
A lucky star's above
But not for me
With love to lead the way
I found more clouds of gray
Than any Russian play
Could guarantee
I was a fool to fall
And get that way
Hi-ho, alas! and al-
So, lack-a-day

But what an end.

In my hunt for the Billie Holiday version of this song, I actually came across some tunes with Kenny Burrell playing her. I was floored by that. Had no idea he had performed with Bille. The great Kenny B has been EVERYWHERE.

The Sinatra version was from 1979. It was from the "Past" segment of the famously awful/glorious The Trillogy. The other two discs represented "Present" and "Future" (featuring the unforgetable "World War III.")

If you mentioned this, I missed it: 19 year old Ginger Rogers sang it in stage version of Girl Crazy.
KimSorise:
Doug Schulkind:
I could not find a recording of Ginger Rogers from 1930. I did fine a remake she did in the 1970s that was a nice bit of nostalgia, but nothing that would add to the discussion. The Ella version is marvelous.
