Do creatures make you shiver?

How happy are scaly reptiles!
Down, down, down into the darkness of the reptiles,

*for the record, I really do love Nirvana but they have very little to do with punk for me. they were never very DIY, and their sound is way more informed by metal and pop than anything else. I just intensely dislike Unplugged, as mentioned. it's the Frampton Comes Alive of my generation. but yeah, they're a good radio band. before that, a good Melvins tribute

so obviously it wouldn't be fashionable for "punks" to like nirvana after they broke into mainstream (opening the doors for those very "punks")
it doesn't matter what "the punks" thought, or claimed.
Avatar 2:00am
northguineahills:

Considering the word 'punk' goes back to the 17th c, and it only came into the meaning as we know it as no good person, in the early 20th c, by 50s, even rockbillies called themselves punks as a badge of honor.
  2:01am

re: Bikini Kill... when you're charging 150-200 bucks for your reunion show at the Hollywood Palladium 20 plus years after you were relevant, you are no longer allowed to utter the word "punk" ever again. @JBoogie: I saw JD (Le Tigre) was djing at a lesbian club. Being cis straight male, I knew I couldn't get in. So, I asked my lesbian friends to go w/ me. I wasn't let in. But after my friends vetted me for 10 minutes, I was let in (I told the bouncer, I'm just here for the music). I was the only male there. JD was awesome, and talked to her.

that sounds so weird.

@JBoogie: I hung out w/ them every other weekend, and they came to my dj sets. They were artists and musicians, and knew I was harmless.

yeah I remember lots of Kathleen Hanna stuff like that, even after BK... with le Tigre... but not specifics. wouldn't fly these days at all. she'd be cancelled.

how many official gay bars? i'm a little confused. are they all "nonbinary" bars now? or?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13am
coelacanth☯:

ngh i wouldn't want to be there, personally.
a friend wanted me to come with her to see Cat Power at some lesbian club, c.1997. she thought i'd get in... but i couldn't imagine having a good time amongst a bunch of judgemental sexists.

There was a time, where LGBQ+ people literally needed a safe place to hang out and meet like-minded people. I grew up (HS) in the Deep South and most of my friends were gay and went to gay bars just for decent culture.

and why are they endangered? what a bummer
Avatar 2:16am
northguineahills:

@coel: uh, that night (2004), I had an amazing time, but I had 5 friends around me, they all protected and explained why I was there I was harmless. By the end of the night, i was on first-name basis w/ the bartender. (I'm a good chameleon).
Avatar 2:17am

@JBoogie: partially, b/c of the pandemic, and b/c the lack of stigma of lesbians in most parts of the country. So, you can be anybody and go to most place today, and no one cares (rural South does not apply).
  2:17am
JBoogie:

these days couldn't you just insist that you identfy as woman and anyoen who challenges you, declare as the true oppressor? send out a tweet and get the squad there to protest in 15 minutes

ah ok that makes sense now

Even before the pandemic, my understanding is gay bars are getting rare because of the huge success of gay dating apps, at least from what I’ve heard Dan Savage say.

@Ike: in the last decade and a half, most of my gay friends just go to any other bar/club. No one cares anymore. That said. My bros (who are GOPers), have a friend that is gay and takes us to one of two gay bars left in Orlando before each soccer game. (It's across the street from the stadium).

weird, coel! I used to go there afterwards as the bouncers knew who I was. (Not sure if it would of worked in 1997)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24am

i can say that "my" bar is a "safe space" for ...everyone; and aggressively (occasionally to a fault) enforced. so it's understandable that the necessity for a "gay bar" isn't so great.

i'm stoned now... and someone way back mentioned shoegaze and we were talking about Sub Pop... Love Battery... is a band that I really overlooked back then. Dayglo is a really amazing record. sounds more British than American. Reminds me of Swervedriver a lot. Also, should be mentioned what a massive influence Dinosaur Jr and J Mascis was on the entire shoegaze genre via MBV. You can really hear it on those early Dinosaur rekkids.
