David: Not really, this is hell week, but once it's out of the way it'll be more or less back to normal. I have the first draft of 72 illustrations for a book to complete by Friday (a little more than halfway there), plus I let myself get roped into a couple of weeks with Microsoft, revamping a user's guide. But because of all that, a few bands will be a little happier and a little richer on Bandcamp Friday. How are things over there?

A lot of the times clients will try to rope me into wordsmithing, till I tell them that I'd of course have to add an appropriate surcharge for expanding the scope of the project and that it would slow everything down. That I don't know, Mariano. I only know that when an older guy came in and ordered a cabinet and I said, "Well, I'd love to make you one, but this is a cafe, and I just don't have the tools" and he said, "But sure you do, they're right there. Make it chocolate," and I said, "Now that's a talent I wish I had," we might have set the record for two people just goggling at each other in a New England cafe. Eventually we found common ground, though.

Hello Handy!
A handful of years ago I was in Newport with my ex, and he was at some stupid dinner, so I looked online for cheap local food. I found myself at a neighborhood cafeteria sorta place in Fall River that was an incredible and very specific experience. Orange formica, really weird patrons, a handsome young guy behind the counter with a thick accent, and awesome cheap food I'd never had before. I ate SO MANY things. They all were, like $2.

FWIW, JBoogie, the Moderna dose I got didn't do anything to me, just a little soreness in the arm for a day. The bad one was the typhoid vaccination I got when I was a 4 or 5, it gives you a mild case of typhoid and they have to quarantine you for a day or two (I can't imagine what a full case would be like). It's normal though for vaccines to make you slightly ill, since they're designed to make your system produce antibodies.

Like Mariano, I'll chime in with my Moderna experience, so far. I did not feel the needle at all, which was a mitzvah. Later in the day my arm was sore enough that I took a few ibuprofen before bed, which worked like a charm and I slept well. My arm was sore the next day but only if I poked it. A few days later, though, I got a pretty big headache. Thinking it was a migraine coming on, I took some OTC migraine meds. They did nothing. Later on I drank two pint glasses of ice water with lime wedges. 20 minutes later, no headache. I'm planning to be ill for Prick#2, and I know that it's just my antibodies activating.

Yeah, never forget that the long lead times in development for many medicines are a *construct*, the result of lots of money and lots of interests looking to maximize their returns, not *ours*. This is just a slight shift toward the *us* in a tiny specific instance. There's no "rightness" to a longer development time -- only the massive resources devoted to more profitable matters instead most of the time.

from what it looks like, mRNA (Moderna, Pfizer, for instance) shot #1 response (other than covid arm) is a result of previous exposure to covid-19. shot #2 more closely resembles that second exposure for folks who never got covid-19. this isn't a rigorous study, but does seem to fit most folks experience.

Chris, I heard that too. But my wife and I had opposite experiences with the first dose and it’s basically impossible that only I was exposed to it. Who knows

wonder how many of you that are practically calling for mandatory vaccinations are also "pro choice". because that's curious

Listener Robert:

Rev Rabbit, what makes you think the number of persons infected has much effect on the rapidity of development of virus mutations? RNA replication (this is an RNA virus) is inherently "noisy" (unfaithful), so there are always plenty of mutants available. What's limiting is the selection. It's the development of treatments and immunity that applies the selection pressure for resistant strains to come out.

@Dough/Handy: haha! That's great! I met her at the NPL branch library down neck on Van Buren Street I want to say in 2013 or 2014. Very cool that book got a bump! I wanted to trace the river's source like she did but I just wandered around the Great Swamp.

Listener Robert: If fewer people are infected there is less opportunity for a virus to mutate. Is it not that simple? Perhaps what you say is over my head. Perhaps it is obfuscating jargon. The fault there may be mine - but of this moment I remain unconvinced.

Listener Robert:

The virus mutates so much in any individual that it doesn't matter how many people are infected. Think of the number of cells infected, not the number of humans.
  6:02pm
Listener Robert:

In other words, the number of mutations is always in vast excess, but they're selected for only as people's cells become resistant to infection.
