March 28, 2021: A Thad is Born, and Tete Too
Michigander trumpet and flugelhorn immortal Thad Jones celebrates his 98th birthday at The Stork Club this Sunday. Likewise we shall basque in the glories of Catalonian pianist Tete Montoliu (MOAN-tell-yu) - born 10 years later in Barcelona. Thad Jones is best known for his big band recordings with drummer Mel Lewis, but we’ll also hear him with Basie, Monk, Mingus, Ben Webster, Yusef Lateef and many others. To Tete Montoliu’s gorgeous solo work we add his recordings with Roland Kirk, Johny Griffin, Anthony Braxton and more and more. Rest your Sunday-bones, and grab that shaker. Over-overtime is anticipated.

Not to try to be a downer, but I think station fundraising over the past year has been a fluke -- a combination of people's being forced to stay home while in some cases receiving monetary compensation. Therefore I hope Auricle's debt gets paid off or significantly paid down this year. Some of the audience will ripen as programs on the various streams become better known, which will increase donations, but not to the degree of the pandemic year. I think certain costs will diminish as the paid services of some of the "skeletons" at HQ on Montgomery St. will no longer be needed, but there'll also be spending on some things that weren't possible during the pandemic.

I'm pretty sure the phone volunteers will be restored in 2022, but we should recognize that it's in very large measure a social thing -- as much volunteer work on anything most places is, and doesn't produce such a great increment in income to the station. I don't know if they still need to do temporary construction every February and takedown afterward to make it possible, or whether the current configuration of HQ allows the volunteers to just "move in".

I've been an FMU addict a few years now - & I've seen listeners come & go a bit. Natural probly... There was the Ichiban thing - recalcitrant to open that can of worms - as I was to look into @ all really... Pandemic probly did a *few* things. There's the EIP Stimulus most obviously - @ the same time I think lockdown made people really appreciate what FMU provides ! Essential Working as far as we're concerned... Dunno how many got deeper in that way - but some ?? & - the weirdness of the Economy & Society in general @ this stage is maybe - hopefully? - bringing changes like GoFundMe where people are accepting & adjusting to this kind of relationship... I dunno. Financially - I'm lost myself !

Can a playlist community expand if newcomers are swamped out and ignored by the regulars? I don't think hard limits is a solution, because it only hardens the insiders. What to do?

I'm sorry that you have observed the WFMU community sometimes being unwelcoming to new listeners. You aren't alone in reporting this, but I think (hope?) that this kind of experience is infrequent and isolated. I would be mortified to learn of any Drummer Stream listener, newbie or regular, feeling excluded in any way. From the very inception of the stream, I have emphasized that fostering a collective, inclusive atmosphere is vital to the scene.

What fred says perks my brain but I'm having trouble with relevant observation or conclusion about it... FMU is intimidating Culturally - by nature as commercially marginal stuff ...& also as comprised of people who take this seriously ! I'm *always* in over my head - but I happen to like being exposed to more & learning as much as I can pick up. But maybe that's not mainstream @ all. As a Community - & in Comments - FMU is remarkably - almost Ideally! - positive & troll-free. The two seem to be in contrast - but both have to do with a kind of Discriminating mentality...

Word, Doug. Tangentially but relatedly, your Gladys Bentley featurette b/w Chris Albertyn's recurring guest spot, served from the recent archives, got me through the Holland Tunnel crush at the end of a 10-hour drive yesterday, in good spirits. You must be doing something right…
