Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

It was during the "We Lost a Ton of Money on Pinocchio and Fantasia" period of Disney.

I'm not sure I've seen an animated musical since... 1965? But the Bill Evans version of Some Day My Prince Will Come (Snow White) is one of his great performances.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:06pm

I did a review of The Tune in Cineaste magazine when it came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm

I was hoping you'd do the Triplets
Avatar 🎭 7:09pm

Evans also played the theme from Alice in Wonderland (I think an animated version), but it didn't catch on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm

There are lots of really great animation soundtracks out there. We particularly like Coraline, Kirikou, and lots of old Fleisher Bros cartoons.

I LOVE the songs from Brave Little Toaster! It's a great movie too.

There are many totally absurd musicals/films made that make you ask, "What were they THINKING?" And then once in 5 years or so, one of them turns out to be brilliant—thus leading to 5 more years of absurd ideas being taken seriously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:39pm

The hell is this movie? When did this come out? From the mind of George Lucas

Flop musicals and flop animated musicals are a specialty of this show!

Strange to hear a pop song from 1930s as a song in a 2010 animated musical.

Sita Sings the Blues is pretty good. Its up for free everywhere because the woman who made it HATES intellectual property laws.
Avatar 🎭 8:13pm
Listener Gregory:

"I've got a feeling I'm falling" was also in the musical Ain't Misbehaving, which was sadly live action with real people. Great musical, and the cast album is wonderful.

John Hubley's version of Finian's Rainbow got its soundtrack recorded before it got shut down by the Blacklist. a topnotch bunch of singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. I think pirated versions of the soundtrack are kicking around ot there.

Big sing along here (to Prince of Egypt), was a big hit here

@doctorjazz: I somehow never saw the Prince of Egypt, but that song is a bop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
doctorjazz:

And Sebastian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm
Cmurtha:

Prince of Egypt/Road to El Dorado are both among the best Dream Works ever made.
Avatar 8:28pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I've never seen either, somehow, despite having been born in 1994. I was a Pixar kid through and through and thought animated musicals were lame. And then I grew up and became obsessed with animated musicals and wrote a musical about Ashman & Menken
Avatar 8:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

in case anyone is wondering why i love Ashman & Menken so much, listen to Hakuna Matata (by Elton & Tim Rice), really focus on the music and lyrics, and then do the same with this song...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm
Cmurtha:

I recomend them both, more so Prince of Egypt as its more of a musical and its a prettier movie. Howard Ashman really loves his 10 dollar words in Disney songs.
Avatar 🎭 8:30pm
Listener Gregory:

@WebhamsterH, why did the blacklist shut down Finian's Rainbow? It made it to Broadway and then to Hollywood, with Fred Astaire. That version sounds awesome though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
doctorjazz:

We still have the Prince of Egypt in VHS (but no VHS player connected)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm

@Gregory This was in the 50s when HUAC was going after folks like Yip Harburg and John Hubley. His investors got scared away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Gregory and Disney was vicious toward anyone who was against him in the famed Disney Strike, and thought they were all communists. Hubley was at the newly formed UPA studio at the time.
Avatar 🎭 8:37pm
Listener Gregory:

Just looked up John Hubley. Interesting character. His daughter is a member of Yo La Tengo, which is a favorite group of mine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
doctorjazz:

Ah, Georgia, knew the name was familiar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm
Webhamster Henry:

Yeah, Georgia is one of the kids in Hubley's WINDY DAY. I've been a longtime Hubley fan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Webhamster Henry:

Emily Hubley animated the animated bits in "HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH", the movie, a lot in the Hubley style that her parents both animated in.
Avatar 🎭 8:42pm
Listener Gregory:

Bronwyn, I wonder if the album cover you're showing for Lady and the Tramp is from the non-musical original (which I saw as a child) and not the musical remake of 2019.

Cmurtha:

Great show tonight Bronwyn!

Of course the Tom Waits Version reveals the ugly underbelly of dwarf exploitation.
