	1:21pm Tony Coulter: Yes, this M.A.L. track is indeed titled "For Daevid Alleen," not "For Daevid Allen" -- even though that is obviously who it is dedicated to.
	1:21pm headcleaner: "slightly tragic" applies to people who suffer greatly but through their bad choices (e.g. joining a cult, doing tons of drugs / alcohol, etc). In her case, her suffering appears to have been entirely involuntary.

I'm sure she had plenty in her life which was not tragic and which she would like to be remembered for. It was not intended to be judgemental or quantifying around suffering - that seems a fairly profitless endeavour.

	1:38pm Mark Williams: Tony, did you get that Vinyl-on-Demand released 2cd book about Cassette Culture? Can't remember the author. The whole DIY/industrial scene is covered there, though he's an American so he's stronger on the scene in this country.

	♥ 2:39pm Yvang: But I only know autotune is popular and widely used because I hear it played loudly from cars passing down my street.
	♥ 2:41pm David (in London): The only good things that can be put forward in favour of Autotune are the comedic moments when it breaks down in a live setting, leading to sudden bursts of caterwauling.
	♥ 2:42pm coelacanth∅: used in a creative way is one thing... not often my thing, but respectable enough (to me)... but using it to "make the singing perfect" is . . . perverted. perfect singing to me is good singing - not necessarily technically flawless singing, just good singing. a human being singing to other human beings. is that a lot to ask?! "corrected" singing is impressive only in the skill of a computer programmer.

	♥ 2:45pm Stanley: Am I correct in thinking that's why modern 'pop' music sounds the same to me? Not that I listen but I did catch some played on the radio of some nearby workmen.

	♥ 2:49pm David (in London): There was a famous 'No Autotune' demo version of Britney Spears' Alien doing the rounds a few years back. Now I actually have a soft spot for Britney, but ye Gods, it was like a knitting needle in the ear.
	♥ 2:53pm coelacanth∅: Stanley i think that's part of it. it's all very formulaic and sadly the younger people have been conditioned to enjoy it. i've known collage kids (i live in a college town) who truly appreciate lots of very good music but also get down to the most vacuous formulaic crap i can imagine

	2:56pm Tony Coulter: Funny to think that the original idea for autotune was that the effect was supposed to go unnoticed. It was supposed to sound "natural" -- like a real person singing in tune. Of course, it doesn't sound natural at all, and it ended up being used for its particular sound quality, even with singers who can sing in tune. Just like mellotrons were supposed to be able to mimic the sound of string orchestras, but sound nothing like them. Yet they ended being used for their own unique sound.

"corrected" singing is impressive only in the skill of a computer programmer.

	2:56pm Tony Coulter: Funny to think that the original idea for autotune was that the effect was supposed to go unnoticed. It was supposed to sound "natural" -- like a real person singing in tune. Of course, it doesn't sound natural at all, and it ended up being used for its particular sound quality, even with singers who can sing in tune. Just like mellotrons were supposed to be able to mimic the sound of string orchestras, but sound nothing like them. Yet they ended being used for their own unique sound.
