I first came to learn of Hale Smith from Prof. Wendell Logan, head of the Jazz Department at Oberlin. (Smith hailed from nearby Cleveland.) He hipped me to the special relationship between Hale Smith and Eric Dolphy.

I met William Christie in 1984 when I visited Europe to hear his ensemble, Les Arts Florissants, in live performances. Christie remains alive and kicking. LAF's B minor mass is glorious.
