Hi Irene! Very happy that I get to listen to you today. I'm in Kentucky. We got an ice storm last week, a little bit of snow last night, and are expecting 5-8 inches of snow this afternoon and tonight. Good day to sit back and listen to some Irene!

Hi Sem and Marcos! Yes, it's a good day to listen in!

Hi Irene + Peter! I hope you play a good survey of Corea's works!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm

The range of his musical eplorations and interests should be something we all should be open to and strive for (except perhaps the Scientology thing, but, whatever). His legacy is in sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm
Irene Trudel:

Hey Henry and alanr! We were surprised at how many albums we have with Chick on them, and we still don't have everything. Plenty to choose from, and hoping we can fit what we planned into 3 hours.

Sorry for posting things out of order! I'll have to correct the time links after the show.

Henry, Peter and I saw Corea-Fleck in concert at Town Hall. Such great interplay between them.

This Brazil is petty crazy (though banjo + anyone song not-country is by definition crazy sounding).

I was heavily into Prog Rock at the time I discovered RTF. They really resonated with me.

Glad to be able to listen! Read later interviews with Chick Corea and found them inspiring and so sad at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm

Prog rock wasn't what hippy-rock fans (Dead, Allmans,Band) listened to either back them, at least, in my neck of the woods.

Sad I can't clicky-star the show again once I've clicky-starred it already.
  1:42pm
Dean:

First heard RtF in the mid-'70s, Where Have I Known You Before, after having already been exposed to the delights of Birds of Fire, for which, indeed, I was prepared by Close to the Edge, Yessongs, Tales from Topographic Oceans, and other timeless prog monuments. Other great fusion bands to my ear include Gary Boyle's marvelous Isotope, and Dutch band Solution. PFM's Jet Lag, too, seems to have straddled the border between prog and fusion. Then there are the so-called Krautrock bands like Release Music Orchestra that bent prog in the direction of fusion, as did Denmark's Secret Oyster.

Saw RtF during the Romantic Warrior tour at LA's Music Center. Stevie Wonder made a surprise appearance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
Irene Trudel:

doctorjazz, that's often the case when I plan a tribute show. There are some things I just gottta have for our collection. Hi βrian and Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm
Irene Trudel:

Dean, sounds like we had a similar exposure to music back in those days. Sorry we didn't see RTF on their reunion tour. Tickets went fast, and I should've known it wouldn't be repeated.
Avatar 🥁 1:47pm
βrian:

I recall seeing Chick in 79 at the A² jazz fest. Seemed like a time of ferment.
  1:53pm
Dean:

In 1982 Don Snowden wrote a piece for the LA Times, Fusion Is Popular, But What Is It?: Be It Jazz-Rock, Jazz-Funk or 'Fuzak,' It's the Reigning Instrumental Music. Features Jeff Lorber. Remember him?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm
doctorjazz:

Dean, you get the discs yet? Still open to trade on a double (sealed) 2 LP Thelonius Monk with John Coltrane. (I also found a sealed doubleof Sonny Rollins in Holland, 3 lp sweet. Have to keep better track of my purchases...🙃
  1:55pm
Dean:

Emailed you, doctorjazz, an hour or so ago. Yes! The Neville is beautiful. Haven't listened yet to Fort. Those LPs are tempting. Let me see if I have any non-classical duplicates...
  1:57pm
Peter K.:

Dean, Jeff Lorber (who I'm pretty sure is still around) had a saxophonist in his group named Kenny Gorelick. Yes, him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm
Irene Trudel:

Several years ago, when Soundcheck was a live program (I'm their regular mix engineer), we had a "Smackdown" segment on whether Fusion was good or bad. Al DiMeola actually called in on his own to argue that fusion=good.
  1:58pm
Peter K.:

P.S. I hope everyone listening is having as good a time as Irene and I are!
Avatar 2:01pm
Marshland:

Only time I saw Chick was in 2006, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. It was sold out, but I managed to get a seat on the stage itself, behind the band, when they released those extra stage tickets at the last moment :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
doctorjazz:

Back then, to my mind, there was "good fusion" (Miles, Ornette) and "bad fusion" (Spyrogyra, Yellow Jackets), which morphed into smooth jazz. Where you placed on the spectrum determined how seriously you were taken. Boxing artists in categories does limit one and close the ears and mind, I'm learning in my old age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Sem:

Peter K.: loving this, all of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm
doctorjazz:

@Dean, open to classical I "should" hear...
  2:06pm
Dean:

Somewhere out there in the vast archives of YouTube is a remix of Kenny G. on soprano saxophone with a high note that lasts something like a full minute or more, purely artificial treatment of one of his middling records. But it's the perfect mash-up of reed man Kenny G. and the other Kenny G.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
doctorjazz:

Cookie brunch for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Irene Trudel:

Marshland, maybe the last time we saw Chick wasin 2016 at The Blue Note birthday residency in NYC, at the Mahavishnu Meets Return to Forever show. We had seats right next to Chick's electronic keyboard setup. So amazing to see his hands close up.
Avatar 2:13pm
Marshland:

Just been looking at all your Flickr photos of it Irene, great seats indeed.

I got both doses, my wife gets dose 2 this Saturday. Wish we could find it for my 2 daughters (but they're in their 20s, so rightfully should defer to those at more risk. The younger one is a teacher, but her Jersey town is all on line/Virtual classes, so no exposure there).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
doctorjazz:

Irene @ 1:57. I really miss that live Soundcheck show, used to do my best to catch it every afternoon. Did WNYC (foolishly) kill it, or did it just get to be too much for John?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm
Irene Trudel:

No, it was a management decision, doctorjazz. It's now a staff of three-- me, John and our producer Caryn. John's been hosting remote sessions but I really miss doing those live band streams. Maybe by next summer again we'll be back at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
doctorjazz:

Pity, I like the news coverage there, but how many talking heads do you need to analyze how bad things in the country are? Wouldn't a sprinkling of life-affirming art/music help offset it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm
Webhamster Henry:

Hey at least we convinced WNYC not to kill off New Sounds and install even more blah-blah-blah.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:47pm

@Irene--if you are in NYC, forget the pharmacies for now. Try any of the "community health centers" and be sure to use an older browser like IE when it comes to the whole "confirmation" thing...I am sure that's why I got an appointment; I couldn't verify in Chrome!
