The even funnier reminders for me is that when Jack was born, I was 5 months into my teaching career, I’d just turned 24, and I was on the 1st of 17 straight years of teaching 16-17 year olds.
Crazy!!!

What’s Jack’s 12th grade English pic?
It’s an interesting year because he actually has four different options.
I teach AP Lang at the other high score for senior English credit.
I also teach the expository and creative writing workshop for senior English credit at the other school.
My friend teaches an amazing class called service learning, Which is available at both schools, teaches you all of the practical skills of creating a service organization/series of projects and works you quite literally through those skills in the real world or these days the Tele world, but that’s how it would likely be in many circumstances anyways due to distance issues.
Then there’s always the regular English 12 option, but with all of those other spectacular choices I say Boo! To plain vanilla English.

So many choices! "Plain vanilla English" does not always have to be so bland. Some of my standard Comp II classes rocked. When students read Whitman and Dickinson they got the not so subliminal messages. It was very hot or cool. Some of my more advanced classes could give a crap but we kept trying. So many variables in each class.

It is time! Newark Penn is a mess. Will the new bathrooms stay new or will they become a dwelling and cleaning place for those who really need it? What will happen to the graffiti on stall doors? Some good stuff!

English class for at least 13 of those 17 years and I am happy to say that I made it as awesome and experience as it could be, in my not so humble opinion.
My main point was to make sure that you explore all your options when many people don’t even realize that there are options available. However I dutifully retract my Boo!
Any class is what you and the teacher can make of it and those regular English classes are what made me want to be the English teacher that I have been for a very long time.

So true. I am ready to give up the gig except for journalism. My reporter spirit will stay with me forever. Department is sort of begging so I will hang in for a few more semesters, maybe. You must be that great English teacher who students remember.
