Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

I've seen a lot of versions of Alice, but I suspect the 19th century theatrical ones were the best. That and the Andre Gregory one and the Svankmajer.
Avatar 7:11pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

The Svankmajer one is CRAZY (and great)
Avatar 🎭 Swag For Life Member 7:13pm
diciassette:

Ahoy! I think I have seen the Svankmajer Alice pop up in Mubi or something simliar. I've never watched it, though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm
Webhamster Henry:

The Alice bits in Dreamchild are also pretty out there. en.wikipedia.org...

I'm a big Lewis Carroll fan, had his complete works in High School, the collected letters, the Annotated Alice, etc. etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm
Webhamster Henry:

The book on the Andre Gregory Alice and how they put it together is pretty spectacular for theatre lovers. Also: many, many pix by Richard Avedon.

I really need to read some Carroll, I never have

Hi Folks! My wife saw this version of Hello Dolly. (She's very pleased to hear it now)!

Carroll’s birthday is next week. (Not coincidentally, so is mine.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Webhamster Henry:

@Drj I saw that production too!
Avatar 7:30pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

So jealous, I've never seen any version of Hello Dolly live. I tried to get tickets to the Bette one but they were too expensive
Avatar 7:30pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Happy early birthday Jeff!! *confetti*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm
Webhamster Henry:

I saw a Hello Dolly done at a local high school a few years ago when they had one of those really good theatre director. I think some of the cast have gone on to theatrical careers (and I hope they are ok).

My high school did Hello, Dolly, when I was a student there. I stage managed.

I did get to see Dolly, the Bette Midler version, but her stand in performed that night.

Donna Murphy was Bette's stand in (she actually was fabulous)!

Omg I would have loved to have seen Donna!! I love her

Hah Via Galactica was the show that opened the Uris Theatre when it was brand new in '72 or '73. They had built a whole lotta platforms for the roller skates! The second production there was See Saw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Webhamster Henry:

The Uris Theatre got renamed the Gershwin.
Avatar 7:44pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

When I saw Wicked last January I told my friend who accompanied me "This theater used to be called the Uris" and he didn't believe me. "The WHAT?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm

Hahahah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm

That first Tintypes tune is "La Petite tonkinoise", a staple of Josephine Baker.

Hello, Show People. I swear I was only 10 minutes late, but the usher made me wait until the intermission to come in.
Avatar 🎭 8:01pm
Listener Gregory:

Also, I saw Ragtime in Chicago, I believe, and I felt it was overwrought, with huge productions just for the sake of spectacle. I am sorry to be a downer. Uh oh, the usher is telling me I have to leave now.

Also very hard to believe Ogden Nash of humorous verse fame wrote these lyrics (Speak Low).

(in fact, most show tunes I knew I heard because a jazz musician played it. Until I had a wife and daughter who were musical theatre fanatics, that is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm

I think it's just some of the ones working in Hollywood in 1929. Jack Benny is telling some lame jokes and pausing for laughs, but to see some of those guys is pretty good.
