It's too bad it's so unusual to see a playlist open with four comments in a row from non-male persons (IIRC, I hope I am not misgendering anyone). Kudos, raising a glass to y'all, not for any particular reason, just because. And alla youse guys as well!

Heya David. Looks like some of you scaled the walls and breached train a little early.

Handy Haversack:

Yay, Threemoons is here! Now it's a party!

Threemoons, I wanted to say that last March 14, right before everything shut down, we actually went to the JC Word! It's *huge*! We were like the dorkiest tourists in history. I think the staff kind of loved it.

Hello David and listeners
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:04pm
Threemoons:

@Handy aww, thank you! I really want to go to the JC branch--the Greenpoint branch is very nice and I love the staff and selections but bigger is always better with indie bookstores! Try to hit Book Culture LIC if you can one day--it's a huge 2-level affair.

Hello, David, and all aboard. Love me some banjo tunes from the Continent.

As someone who remembers the days when Borders Books ran rampant across the American landscape, "huge" isn't the first word that would come to mind for Word JC. So it's bigger than the one in Brooklyn then?

Handy Haversack:

Lisa, chresti, Carmichael, Bas, Ike, and David in the Smoke!

Ike, I see what you're saying about Harrow and was confused for a while but trusted the process -- and once the reveal happened was quite taken with the device. I want to reread Gideon and Harrow back to back -- and want also to reread the Baru Cormorant books in order now that the last is come out.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:05pm
Threemoons:

More "before times" fun--go to PS1, peruse bookstore and award-winning periodicals section there, have a drink there, go to Xian Famous Foods (which burned to the ground right before the pandemic alas) and then go across the street to Book Culture. Finish up with a drink at Domine's Hoek LIC. Sigh.

Ike, yes, huge in comparison to Greenpoint's.

Hey, Stanley! Interesting piece on the Glenfinnan monument in the Guardian today. I remember seeing it first in 2009 when there was no visitor center or anything and the Harry Potter tourism was just starting up.

And, er, I'll take a can.

May I please ask an embarassing question? I only see the schedule for the "main" WFMU programming...is there a page that shows the schedule for GDR, Sheena's Jungle Room, etc? Can't seem to find it in my sleep-deprived state. Help please!

Threemoons:

Fun fact about the character "õ"--it's a vowel unique to spoken Estonian; it is in no other language on Earth. Hard to explain how it sounds--tongue against the back teeth but clear of front teeth; kind of pronounced like the long middle e in "Eeeew"

Thanks Handy, I didn't catch that.
But let's remember a huge portion of 18th-19th century Scottish wealth was based on the plantations in the West Indies and America. The article makes it look like that's 'news'!

Thanks David for this trip into Rantin' Laddie / Lord Aboyne! Really beautiful to move through the facets of a ballad in this kind of sequence. Glad to be tuning in and to learn that this kind of treatment of the ballads is a weekly feature here! Gonna have to check back into the archives for sure to catch on up! I've been making my way through singing the ballad tunes recorded Bronson’s volume “The traditional tunes of the Child ballads” over the past few months at home, and loved listening in to the variations in those you just presented. Thanks!

i think there's a Seainfeld episode where George does just that, βrian and Threemoons.... it's also horrible in San Francisco (besides street cleaning, there's also a rule that requires moving a car every 72 hours, though that one isn't as strictly enforced (unless someone complains) i had a great spot for that.) i don't miss that *having moved out of the city in October) -- it's nice to have a driveway again

@Spodiodi I feel blessed that I was able to sell my last car back in '95. My brother, who used to live on Douglass Street in Brooklyn, needed a car for work. His employer said that they would pay for up to 3 parking tickets a month. My brother was running up 3 alternate side tickets a WEEK.

Threemoons:

Another booming niche economy right here in Astoria--people who rent a level of a multi-family house that has a garage but don't have a car--they sell off their parking space on a monthly basis. If a key is needed, usually the LL gets a cut also.

I didn't need a car in the city, and didn't have one most of the 25 years i spent there (motorcycles and scooters are much better :) though, i was glad to have it when we moved (and had found a spot where i could let my car sit for weeks, months, even over a year once(!) -- on a really steep hill without street cleaning)

@Hi David- I’ve just been singing a ballad for 30 or so minutes each evening while putting our 2 month old daughter to bed. The long ballads with their repeated melodies seem beautifully suited for that kind of zone…. even if some of the subject / thematic matter might be a bit intense and heavy, to put it lightly, ha! (Bronson’s book is kind of the musical companion to Child’s work, collecting all the known transcriptions and published melodies associated with a given ballad). Last night was am 18 stanza version of “Babylon, Child no 14.,first published in 1827 in Kinloch’s Ancient Scottish Ballads as “The Duke of Perth’s Three Daughters. Broson’s work assembling all these materials is great and deeply scholarly, but no doubt it would be lovely to have a physically smaller edition which was laid out for actual use by singers, with the melody notation and text consistently on the same page, and perhaps some nice illustrations as well to make the page look pretty for the kids to look at… but as far as I know, no one has ever published such a thing).

At a lecture demonstration I once attended in Seattle, Washington, Dumisani
Maraire, a visiting artist from Zimbabwe, walked onto the stage carrying a round-
box resonator with a fifteen-key instrument inside. He turned toward the audi-
ence and raised the round-box over his head. “What is this?” he called out.
There was no response.
“All right,” he said, “it is an mbira; M-B-I-R-A. Now what did I say it was?”
A few people replied, “Mbira; it is an mbira.” Most of the audience sat still
in puzzlement.
“What is it?” Maraire repeated, as if slightly annoyed.
More people called out, “Mbira.”
“Again,” Maraire insisted.
“Mbira!” returned the audience.
“Again!” he shouted. When the auditorium echoed with “Mbira,” Maraire
laughed out loud. “All right,” he said with good-natured sarcasm, “that is the
way the Christian missionaries taught me to say ‘piano.’ ”
