So I was sitting in a coffee shop and reading a book about stone age star temples (Star.Ships by Gordon White) and the song titles in the last set were all semi-relevant (even Mr. Giant Man, the temple has huge T-shaped pillars that represent people)... a nice coincidence to start my day!

most store-bought hummus is crap (or at least "lacking") too. really, it's gotta be eaten within 2-3 days of production, max. so anything put out there with a longer shelf life in mind is going to taste a bit... funky (in the wrong way)

timFC: 3 bao buns: brisket, fried shrimp, and fried oyster with bacon. It's not traditional Vietnamese, I know. There have been lots of Vietnamese here in New Orleans since the 70s, so Vietnamese and Creole cuisines have been having all sorts of adulterous dalliances for almost half a century, and the result has been amazing (in my opinion). Vietnamese cuisine has become the latest chapter in the ongoing history of Creole cuisine.

YETI BOB:

@mariano: Last time I was in New Orleans (which was the last time I was anywhere but home, back in January) I had some New Orleans Vietnamese cuisine - it was fabulous! And of course Vietnamese food is partly influenced by the years of French occupation, so things sort of go full-circle there.
Avatar 🎸 5:47pm
Carmichael:

Last time is was in NO was Mardi Gras 1980.

Honeybear:

@mariano - I'll put those places on my list - Cảm Ơn (thanks)

YETI BOB:

Food - like music - is based on adapting and modifying things that came before & things that come from other cultures. Almost nothing is 100% original or culturally "pure". If you made music or food that didn't contain any ideas from previously existing music or food, people wouldn't be able to make any sense out of it at all & wouldn't find it very enjoyable (viz: some of the artists featured on this very show)
Avatar 5:49pm
Honeybear:

It's a sad fact that many countries only have interesting food because of either their incredibly viololent colonial past and/or exploitive intake of "guest workers"

Ummm

@Honeybear - - Life is interesting and nuanced and i’m wondering, do you know who Paul Robeson is?
Avatar 5:51pm
YETI BOB:

even most experimental music exists within a tradition and shows certain influences .... it's just really hard to avoid it
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
PaulRobeson1920:

Building on the music that came before sure
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
mariano:

YETI BOB: Yeah, I think the Vietnamese who first came here chose it deliberately. Very similar climates (hot, humid, watery/swampy), and as you mentioned, the French influence. Catholicism too, since most of the original immigrants were devoutly Catholic South Vietnamese refugees. Carm: we might have crossed paths then! Honeybear: my pleasure, come put on a few pounds!

@PR20 - sure do - did I just unintentionally quote him?

I didn't expect to hear Ice Cube's Staple Singers Good Day but that's very cool.

Miss G:

Fabio thanks for some great sets today [ha, of course I would like something called "(More) Favourite Fairytales For Juvenile Delinquents"]

Thanks, Fabio. Much failure today.

Ice Cube was probably inspired by the True Adventures of Fabio for this song. Thanks Fabio!

Ignatatus666:

@Honeybear it’s more annoying then scratching a blackboard. Noise like tnat sends me to the archives. Can’t stand it. Nothing enjoyable.
Avatar 5:58pm
Mister Dobalina:

Today was a good afternoon, from 3-6pm.
  5:59pm
wfmu listener phillip:

wow it's over. that sucks
Avatar 6:01pm
Honeybear:

@Ignatatus - so it's like rubbing styrofoam for you then -- fair enough, life is nuanced, shall we say. There's plenty of stuff that some DJs play that I just can't figure out (or see why they find it all interesting). Fabio's is basically never in that category for me, fortunately
Avatar 6:02pm
Honeybear:

Even when it sounds like rubbing styrofoam :)
