He was a Beach Boys lunatic in the 60s. They were his favorite band and probably still are. I was forced to see many different versions over my childhood. One incarnation even played at my beach club in Atlantic Beach at some point in the mid-80s. Definitely pre-Kokomo and Cocktail. They used to have Doo-Wop shows almost every weekend in the summer.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
Funky16Corners:

My take on LF is that their overall sound is a very deep, very sophisticated mix of rock, country, funk and jazz that many people latch onto a small part of, but taking it all in takes a lot of time and musical maturity.

Classic rock radio was all I had growing up so Little Feat felt like they were being shoved down my throat when all I wanted to listen to was the Jesus and Mary Chain. With enough distance I’ve come to enjoy a lotta that classic rock stuff. I still don’t like AC/DC tho.

I saw LF only once, when they opened in the late '70s (with Lowell) for ELO. I wasn't a fan, but I knew their tunes from radio and in-store play at the record store where I was then working. I do recall feeling that I was in the presence of a very special ensemble.

When You Walk Into The Room, one of those songs great in any version.

I don't usually go in for big pop productions with strings and stuff, but I really, really love "Wichita Lineman," it's just a beautiful song, beautifully written, beautifully sung and beautifully arranged. I loved all the different versions of Dylan and then Dylan himself just slaughtering EVERYBODY. Liked that Ricky Nelson cut a LOT, sure didn't sound live, though. Finally, speaking of Little Feat about an hour ago, I was just listening to "Waiting for Columbus" yesterday, which has to be one of the greatest live albums, ever. Lowell was already gone by 1979, wasn't he?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:27pm

"Tensions within the group, especially between George, Payne, and, to a lesser extent, Barrere regarding musical direction and leadership, led to Payne and Barrere's departure from the group in 1979 and the group's subsequent disbandment." via wikithingy

Hey Mark! I think Lowell passed in 1979, maybe right before the last album came out. The 45 mix of the Rock Nelson track says it's from the Live LP, but the audience noise is either mixed down or it's a different take.

S'funny with WL I never want to own it because I could play it whenever I wanted to. The joy of hearing it on the radio is the fact that someone else (the DJ) needs to hear it and the delight of the opening bars when you do not expect it.

Mid-'79, yes, but he's on WfC, of course. A repeat story of mine: There's a stereo store down the road from me about four blocks. The proprietor is Warren Dewey, one of the engineers of WfC. I brought my copy of the Mobile Fidelity remaster to the store and we played it. Dewey remarked, "Wow, this is really good!" Then he told stories about recording it and then spending endless hours with George redoing solos and such.

Linda developed "spadmodic dysphonia", which, if I remember correctly, was thought to be psychological for a long time, but eventually found to be a physical, treatable problem, which allowed her to return to singing.

This Lee is gorgeous, but still, don't miss Kiri Te Kanawa's take on her 1993 Kiri Sings Kern. The entire album...just radiant.

Peggy Lee deserves an encore. My dad used to have a great picture over his desk of he and Peggy at some club back in the 50s. My brother has it now, I got the one with Dad and Erroll Garner.

Nilsson manages to carry off this album of standards much to my surprise. Thought his voice might not have enough ooomph.
