Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

Has Jen heard of Maria Bertel? She's an experimental trombone player from Denmark (and part of Selvhenter)

Hi Fred! No haven't heard of Maria, but I bet there's some really great experimenting going on in Denmark!

Jen Baker's music has been heard on Give the Drummer Radio before. A little over a year ago, a performance of TILT Brass, including Baker, was aired on Ridgewood Radio: wfmu.org...

Jen, have you run into listener Lyle on the trombone circuit? He occasionally checks in with interesting tales from the road. Like at 5:36 here: freeform.wfmu.org...

Please tell me Jen has 75 trombone playing friends and a parade permit.

Unfortunately, music research institutions are getting hit hard financially (I still get paid, but furloughs look more likely than not in the near future). Grants were already few, it will get worse. The healing angle could help though
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
doctorjazz:

I love this (bones combine amazingly).
  3:23pm
jenbaker:

I'd also do a deep dive into sound healing research - even more so at this point in time! I don't have any idea where to start with finding funding...this kind of thing seems so out of reach for someone without university backing!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:28pm
WR:

We are ready.
  3:30pm
Dean:

I use Pivot to find funding organizations, but it's a database licensed to a university.

GrantForward looks like a promising free resource: https://www.grantforward.com

National Council of Nonprofits: https://www.councilofnonprofits.org/download-grants-research-tools-chart

grants.gov?

I'm finding results for "music therapy," but not for "sound healing."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
fred:

@Jen: I'm in the EU so it's obviously different, but here it seems the best shot is to hook up with a neuroscience team. Many are open to studying sound healing. I think my workplace (a research/music thing in France called IRCAM) has had success getting grants for uses of music and sound for therapy or to ease patient anxiety
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm
fred:

Anyway the neuroscience/music/medicine field seems to be a real thing, with papers in serious conferences and journals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm

thanks Dean

@Jen: I found this list of somewhat related labs: apcsociety.org...
Not a complete one by any means (I'm pretty sure McGill in Montreal has something). Many of these labs will be eager to write proposals with healing in the title in the coming months. And I'd guess some, maybe most, would be genuinely interested
