Good evening! Remembered to tune in early this week.

oh jeez, Englishtown...Raceway Park....Funny cars!

Greatest 1/2 Step ever, hands down.

A very inspired show all around.

Wendy del Formaggio:

@Agent Peter: Now I'm thinking of the Raceway Park commercial with that sped-up laughing intro.
Nitro-burning funny cars!
Avatar 10:14pm
Adamsworth:

Ha ha I'm from Minnesota but I also remember tv commercials for nitro burning funny cars. I didn't know what that meant, but I thought it would be fun. I'd probably be bored out of my mind if I went.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

@Adamsworth: These commercials I'm thinking of are from the 1980s, mostly. Is that when you saw them, too? Maybe it was a big thing across the USA back then. Now I don't watch tv or listen to commercial radio, so if it's still happening, I'd have no idea!
  10:18pm
JakeGould:

Funny cars are drag racers that look like exaggerated stock cars, right?
Avatar 10:19pm
Adamsworth:

yeah it would have been the 80s.
  10:20pm
phat:

rats
  10:20pm
Agent Peter:

They're stock cars with the front end jacked up rebuilt for drag racing.
Avatar 10:21pm
Adamsworth:

I may be mixing up eras, but I think there would also be commericals with a Truckersaurus Rex...maybe that was just Monster Truck shows. I forget if they were combined.
  10:21pm
Dean:

Funny cars and dragsters are the epitome of American muscle-flexing sporting. A billion dollars aimed at about five seconds of wad-blowing. I love it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

The Root Cellar! I live about 20 minutes from that place and keep meaning to go. It's nice to hear a recording from there. This is awesome. Thanks, Jeff!
  10:23pm
Agent Peter:

@Adanswirth.
The ads were a staple of both AM & FM radio. Pretty much any commercial station in NY, Philly or points in between ran them. Think they were on TV too, but that was a long time ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
tuner fish:

Wet Tuna sounds even better with a live drummer! Although the drum machine stuff I've heard before does have a certain character to it that I liked, as well. These guys are so great at jamming, no matter what the instrumentation!

Avant ghetto is the sleeper car of a wfmu drag race
Avatar 10:24pm
Adamsworth:

yeah, they were also a staple of the Midwest boondocks I grew up in! "SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!" Were they on Sundays on the East Coast too?
  10:24pm
Agent Peter:

oh, there's a bunch on youtube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

I vaguely remember the tv commercials for funny cars and such -- there was one for occasional events where they'd do monster trucks in the Meadowlands Arena. In the NYC-area market, the radio ads for Raceway Park played allllll the time when I was a kiddo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

@Adamsworth: TOTALLY! "Sunday Sunday Sunday" is a thing I say sometimes, in that voice, and friends who are younger than I am have no idea what I'm talking about and I feel so sad for them. haha.
  10:27pm
Dean:

Went to two or three drag races at Irwindale (home of sriracha!) with my dad m-a-n-y years ago. Effing amazing. Every sense: smell, touch, taste, hear, see, massively stimulated. The best!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm

Jeff, I did. You have to scroll up above some of the "funny car" comments. haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

I like Matt Valentine a lot. I don't give a rat's ass about NASCAR. :-)

Jeezus, finally a show I can listen to. Heya Jeff and enjoyees. That’s a word, ya? Peter Green is a visionary.
  10:35pm

However, NASCAR doesn't have shit to do with drag racing. Try NHRA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

This Peter Green track is NUTS. I love it. I wish I didn't have to go to sleep so soon. Jeff, your show is always a good way to end my Sunday.

Lots of Dead shows at race tracks, not just Englishtown. Watkins Glen another 70's venue. Manor Down in the 80's but that's a horse track. Played Gulfstream back in '68, also a horsetrack. Skipped Altamont of course.

Hoyt Axton, very cool

Jeff, I've attempted that with half-step as well. I wanted to see when they decided to stretch out the instrumental part before " acrossssssssss the rio grandio part. Cuz they used to go right into it. That half step is just unbelievable. It has never gotten enough respect.
