April Centrone - exploring music of the Arab world

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Multi-talented April Centrone has immersed herself in music of the Arab world. Her roots are playing the drum kit - in fact she's currently in two all-women rock bands (on two continents) - Jane, based in New York, and Iklil, based in Beirut. But she's also learned a range of Arab percussion and stringed instruments. She's toured with major Arab artists. She co-founded the NY Arabic Orchestra.

April is also a music therapist - she just did a music-therapy tour of Malaysia; she's worked with refugees from Palestine, Syria and Myanmar, and she’s making a contribution to the Garden State by launching (with a partner) Fourth Wave Rehearsal Studios, a community arts center in Asbury Park.

One thing April didn't have on her extensive CV was a solo album. But that all changes with the release of New Moon, which she celebrates with a big concert featuring members of the NY Arabic Orchestra - including renowned flutist Bassam Saba - Thursday night April 26th as part of the Uncharted women-artist-focused concert series at Greenwich House Renee Weiler Concert Hall, 46 Barrow Street in the West Village.
