Eva Salina and Peter Stan:
Great Balkan Romani Songs

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Eva Salina may be North America's finest vocal interpreter of Balkan music traditions, with a particular passion for vintage Romani popular songs from former Yugoslavia.

On Sudbina, her new album with accordionist Peter Stan, Eva interprets the songs of late great Serbian Roma singer Vida Pavlovic.

Eva and Peter celebrate the album's release with an intimate show at Greenwich House, 46 Barrow St in the West Village on Thursday night March 29th. And they'll be at St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn Heights on Saturday night April 7th as part of the three-day Brooklyn Folk Festival.

But first: Eva Salina and Peter Stan visit WFMU to introduce us to this significant artist who's little-known in the US.

Massive thanks to our illustrious engineer Mark Koch!

Correction - Eva Salina and Peter Stan's Greenwich House concert Thurs. night) is at 46 Barrow St. (NOT 27 as you've been hearing - we recorded this earlier today). Greenwich House has two spaces but the concert is at 46 Barrow St. - my mistake!

I agree with Peter from Dover, tonight's show has been incredible! I have listened to this show for years, but tonight was outstanding! Also, maybe I was listening more carefully!

WFMU is such a beautiful thing! But you know that.. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm хтinа:

So a quick aside about that last song, it describes a kind of migration which is common to the south balkans, whereby men traditionally seek a "fortune" abroad and with luck bring home wealth from foreign lands. A real source of melancholy for the families waiting at home. Still practiced to this day somewhat...awesome talent these two.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Rob W:

Very interesting, thanks for the insight хтinа!

I watched the Emma Gonzalez speech which was impressive.

I'd love to find sites with documentary pics. I tried wading into Flickr, but it's kind of a morass.
