Doug, it is our anniversary. I have hated him for forty five years now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38am Doug Schulkind:

When he dies, his body will probably lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. Just like the loathsome Billy Graham.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:48am Brian in UK:

To think that he would have the same honour as Rosa Parks is beyond words.
Let the music play.

Flipped the switch... Country music fans knew him as Joe Pain, but his parents, Noah and Ester Trent gave him the name Ernest C. Trent when he came into the world in December 1944 in Harlan, Kentucky. This was not your typical family. There were ten boys and eight girls in all. And when company came to visit, he had to sleep out in the smokehouse so the guests would have a place to retire.

Here's what I wrote about Moussa Doumbia on my Favorites of 2007 post on the WFMU blog:

Godfather of Soul wannabes sprang up like kudzu in the 1960s and '70s, and, outside of Chicago and Detroit, the most badass Brown imitators per hectare came from the gritty urban centers of East and West Africa. Anwar Richard and Matata ruled Nairobi, Geraldo Pino and the Heartbeats conquered Lagos, but the heaviest of heavyweight Afrofunkateers may have been Mali's sax-playing, leather-lunged soul belter Moussa Doumbia, who toiled in semiobscurity in the nightclubs of Ivory Coast's capital city Abidjan. Doumbia was a cool cat but no copycat. While others merely reproduced the James Brown sound, Doumbia seemingly conjured, on a nightly basis, the very soul of Soul Brother No. 1 itself. His massive funk workouts featured all the withering, from-the-gut grunts and squeals, but they were layered over a dense thicket of his native Dioula rhythms—along with, of course, skronking horns and skanky guitars. This French compilation of Doumbia's rare singles and one album may be the greatest single-disc trove of African funk ever released.
