Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks for the inspiration, still b/p!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Sounds like she is bending notes on this number. Wicked cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Webhamster Henry:

I'm in a harp-fronted band, but .. No Jazz!
Avatar 9:50am still b/p:

Pretty sure being on hand in some small venue for a performance would've been remarkable and unforgettable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am coelacanth∅:

-i had to think for a minute how one would bend notes on a harp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

Webhamster Harpie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

@coelacanth∅
Rather then physically pushing the string into an unorthodox position, I'm guessing Ashby is applying light pressure to the vibrating sting to affect pitch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am coelacanth∅:

that makes sense (by what i know, which is little). i was thinking pressure to the very top or bottom of the strings, so not to deaden it as much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, that's what I was thinking, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

With her 11th and 12th fingers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am coelacanth∅:

-either way some serious finesse would be in order.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am coelacanth∅:

haha! (@9.58 -exactly!)
  10:00am Ramblin' Ray:

@coelacanth∅
perhaps pedals may enable a string bending effect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Webhamster Henry:

A pedal harp returnes a string by rotating a disk with posts on it; it's a mechanical thing, so if she pushes the pedal down but not all the way, it might bend a string a little.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Subtitle of this magnificent record: "Original compositions inspired by the words of Omar Khayyam, arranged and conducted by Richard Evans)"

Ashby is playing the Japanese koto on this. Wow wow wow!

Avatar 10:02am mauri:

This is magnificent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

Famed jazz cellist Fred Katz is playing the kalimba here.
Avatar 10:04am still b/p:

Ha...was wondering if harps had any design variations that would vary a note. Somebody get in the workshop and affix a whammy bar to it! You need a hell of an arm on ya to work the bar effectively, though, if the instrument is one of those heavy-timbered 8-footers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

Cash McCall on guitar.
  10:04am The Beagle Bunch:

Well Parsons and White made a string bender for guitars so why not harps.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Doug Schulkind:

Lenny Druss on flute. He was on the prev. track, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Webhamster Henry:

The string pressure on a harp makes whammy bars really impractical.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am coelacanth∅:

the smothers brothers?
  10:11am Listener Gregory:

Let's give a shout-out to contemporary harpist Zeena Parkins, who plays traditional harp and a custom electric harp-like instrument. She is more of a Downtown musician but is also very good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am coelacanth∅:

the unfortunate neglect of Roy Harper on wfmu has very slightly been corrected.

@Uncle could you valet my motor too it is rather grubby.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:34am Sem:

Heh, UM.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:36am Sem:

Courageous, Doug. That's some first rate pronouncing effort right there. (Vbenosawenmwighaye )
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:37am Uncle Michael:

Brian, I encountered "valet" as a verb meaning to wash a car for the first time last night, on a Kiwi teevee show. Here velet isn't a verb, it's a person who parks your car for you.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:39am Brian in UK:

Uncle. It can be both. I gave our valet the day off that is why the car needs valeting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

I sprained my tongue, Sem.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:39am Sem:

"That Ol' Bus Smell", probably not the next Axe for men.

Don't think it's splintable, DS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

Actually it's more a I'm not wearing my glasses thing than a I can't pronounce odd combinations of consonants thing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:43am Sem:

Here the G**GLE translate link for pronunciation. Turns out it is Afrikaans

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Sem bringing the knowledge!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:47am Uncle Michael:

Pingu is looking a little tuckered.
Avatar 🥁 11:47am βrian:

I think it's just defaulting to Afrikaans, since it has no frigging idea. All indications are that Miki Jaga is from Nigeria.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Nice of you to care, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

Listening to Uncle Michael, host of Hinky Dinky Time, up next on Give the Drummer Radio. Because he cares!

This set is decidedly NOT a present to my beloved wife on the occasion of her birthday yesterday.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52am Uncle Michael:

Everything is a musical Rorschach on Hinky Dinky Time. I assumed that's how all DJs were...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

Get yourselves ready for our next and final selection. It is rather, um, direct in the story of infidelity it tells.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

"In my little love book, cheating is a no no."

Her little love book?

Her little love book!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:55am Sem:

@βrian, agreed.
Avatar 11:55am northguineahills:

@UM: don't forget valet as the english pronunciation of the word, which isn't to far away from the meaning of the french pronunciation of the homonym.
Avatar 11:56am northguineahills:

to=too
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:56am Sem:

Take care, DS, see you and all next time round the Friday block.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:56am Uncle Michael:

Interestingly, the Kiwis were pronouncing it like us Yanks do.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:57am JtotheK:

thanks for the tunes, Doug!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:57am Uncle Michael:

Valet silent T (no sugar)
Valeting harsh T

Doug, up to scratch. Thanks.
  11:59am Dean:

This song's about substandard room service, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

If it itches, Brian in UK, I am here to scratch it.
