I only saw Cecil Taylor once, but it was a great set. A solo set, though he was supposed to perform with Amiri Baraka, who did a solo opening performance instead. Seems they got into an argument right before the show and didn't want to perform together
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am
Jeff Golick:

That sounds about right, @fred. What was the venue?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am

Good morning everyone...nice selection Jeff. If interested, here's an extensive piece on the recordings leading up to this Kohn gig,and the concert itself. '78 was quite a remarkable year for CT, to say the least. burningambulance.com...

Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:16am
doctorjazz:

Saw CT a few times, great shows. Jarrett and CT are so different, apples and roast beef. Only went to see Jarrett once at the Vanguard. He came out (solo}, started to play, heard some noise, stopped and sat there. Started again, some noise again, stopped again. Sat straight, didn't say a word. Started again, again heard some audience noise, got up and left. End of show. Couldn't listen to him for years after that. Got to like him again when I heard the 70s "American" quartet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Jeff Golick:

Yeah.

I'll confess that I am looking forward to listening to the new Jarrett/Peacock/DeJohnette standards album, tho.
  10:31am
Dean:

J/P/D have another standards record coming out? I play those endlessly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
sberger:

This Threadgill album is wonderful. Just picked it up last week and listened through a few times since. Guys like him and Roscoe, are living legends and to be able to continue to produce on this level after having done it for decade after decade is mind blowing. Recording it is one thing, but to then go out and play live like they still both do is quite another. I'm envious that you're going to see the Shipp/Mitchell gig Jeff...Happy Birthday, btw!
  10:34am
Dean:

Heard CT a few times, most memorably at Victo in the big arena. He had trouble crossing the border into Canada, so John Oswald and Paul Plimley started the show, not having been on the program at all, to be followed by Marilyn Crispell, who was to have opened for CT. O&P played a full set, as did MC...and then CT arrived to play a full set. It was extraordinary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Dean! See: www.amazon.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am

Thanks, @sberger! And yeah: agreed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am
Jeff Golick:

@Dean: what a night!
  10:36am
Dean:

Oh, man, looks great! But I didn't know that Mark E Smith wrote standards.
  10:37am
Dean:

Been listening to a lot of Bill Evans and Jarrett lately. Even spun Jean-Yves Thibaudet's Evans tribute a couple times.
  10:41am
Dean:

I've told this before, but can't resist retelling: Whenever I went to Victo I'd stay at the B&B of a retired nurse who of course knew of the festival, but had no idea what the music was like. She would clip all of the local paper's (French) stories about it and save them for me or send them to me. One year a couple attendees and I decided to give her a gift consisting of a ticket to a show. The show was the CT show with MC and O&P. She went with us and thoroughly enjoyed the l-o-n-g program.
  10:41am
Doug Schulkind:

I have zero tolerance for Jarrett’s pomposity.
  10:46am
Dean:

I'm afraid that even if I learned Jarrett eats children I'd love his standards playing. (His Handel ain't bad, either.) For me, the trio is very much about the three musicians and their mutual inspirations. I love Peacock and DeJohnette, too.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:46am
Uncle Michael:

Don't hold back, Doug!
  10:47am
JtotheK:

@Doug - how much tolerance would you have if Jarrett had a pompadour?
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:47am

@Doug: did Jeff Moore manage to fix whatever was wrong with the stream yesterday?
  10:47am

In high school a bunch of buddies would get together and write what we dubbed "feder" (FADE-er, i.e., feather) stories, short stories composed spontaneously and individually over 15 or 20 minutes, sparked by a shared title, e.g., Picket Fence to Death, Bins at Arcadia, etc. Paradise of Bachelors would have made a great title.
