  12:23pm John in Bklyn:

Holy cow, this sounds great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm doctorjazz:

Sounds like a must have, this Mats live! (I suspect not all live dates were that great, never got out to see them).
  12:24pm John in Bklyn:

Even better than The S*** Hits The Fans cassette! haha
Avatar 12:25pm Joe B:

dr jazz - they werent - i was at the show right before this. doubt they will be releasing that one!
  12:25pm SeanG:

  12:25pm SeanG:

thanks for playing the mats Joe B!

Great recording!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Artie:

Sounds great!
  12:26pm Bob:

Why are The Replacements getting so much rotation on FMU lately? Did someone die?
Avatar 12:27pm Joe B:

new release. guest on the show today
  12:27pm John in Bklyn:

Was anyone at the City Gardens show in '84 when they opened for The DBs? They were relatively sober and rocked.
Avatar 12:28pm Joe B:

they played there twice in 84. unfortunately i wasn't at the good show!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Hoboken Jack:

Hello Joe, Bronwyn, all! Let's rock, shall we?
  12:30pm Bob:

Oh! Sorry, didn't mean to sound so snarky. I'm happy it's a positive reason!
  12:30pm SeanG:

all hail bob mehr--that trouble boys book blew my mind
  12:31pm John in Bklyn:

@Joe B Pretty sure it was December and freezing. I think it was possibly the last gig of the tour?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm BronwynB:

hey jack :D
  12:35pm SeanG:

goddamn this sounds great!
Avatar 12:35pm Joe B:

Avatar 12:37pm Joe B:

snark away bob!
  12:39pm John in Bklyn:

@Joe B Damn, I wish I knew about that one, too! haha
  12:41pm Bob:

I guess I'm just a bit jumpy these days. With all the rocknroll deaths in the past couple of years whenever I start hearing an artist multiple times across multiple djs it's hard not to think "oh no!"
Avatar 12:41pm glenn:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm BronwynB:

@bob: a couple weeks ago the beach boys trended on itunes and i started freaking out like "who died???"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm BronwynB:

@glenn: hahahaha
  12:44pm Dean:

Ask him if he likes L.A. and if so, why.
  12:47pm Bob:

@BrownwynB: yeah, another dj played three Black Sabbath songs in a row and I was like "No Geezer no!"
Avatar 12:49pm Brad1976:

Loved that Quin Galavis one
Avatar 🎸 12:52pm David Shortell:

Re: Replacements at City Gardens in 1984.
Was the bad show the one where the Rettmans opened? Paul smashed his guitar at that one.
Avatar 12:53pm Joe B:

yup!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm joe:

This reminds me for some reason that listening The Replacments cover of Black Diamond and Kiss's cover of Do you Remember Rock & Roll Radio on the same day is why I could finally able to listen to Kiss.
Avatar 12:54pm glenn:

not even the replacements could get me to listen to kiss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm joe:

By the way saw Bash & Pop open for Psychdelic Furs last week and they were so on.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Nate K.:

I love this version of "Can't Hardly Wait." I like every version, really, but this one has so much punch.
  12:57pm John in Bklyn:

@David The show I was at The DBs were headlining. The Mats didn't do anything crazy that I remember. Both bands seemed weary from the road but when they played their energy came back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm doctorjazz:

Agreed, haven't heard a version of Cant Hardly Wait I didn't like, this one is up there, great!
  12:59pm SeanG:

TROUBLE!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Stevel:

Jesus! "I'm In Trouble" has the punch it always had. (I saw them mostly 83-85)
Avatar 1:00pm SmokinJ:

Really nice tracks!
  1:04pm mary:

listening with no playlist and heard more than 2 songs- hell did someone die, happy it ain't so. Love the R. Sound so good always
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Stevel:

Bob was an amazing thing to watch and listen to. Such strong strange energy from the entire band.

Never had the good fortune to see them with Slim.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Stevel:

mary: Live album release. Everything is ok!
Avatar 1:09pm WO Town Wick:

Was Todd-O working at Maxwell's yet at this show?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm joe:

To go along with what Bob said about Maxwells if you are not familar with the room here is a picture www.qromag.com...
Avatar 🎸 1:09pm David Shortell:

I just looked up the Replacements' 1986 SNL appearance and was surprised to see the recently expired Harry Dean Stanton introducing them.
  1:11pm Yalc:

Oddly, I came into Mats orbit quite late, Don't Tell A Soul ... so I love Back To Back, Rock N Roll Ghost, etc. I also enjoy backgammon and birdwatching.
Avatar 1:11pm WO Town Wick:

Really was impressed with Bob Mehr's book. He didn't try to sugarcoat what a d#ck Westerberg could be or his knack for self-destruction.
  1:12pm mary:

omg, now that I see For Sale... i was at that show among others.
  1:13pm John in Bklyn:

Jeez, what a line up on that SNL!
  1:16pm Bob O:

Joe, I was at the '86 Mats Maxwell's show BUT it was sold out, so I stood outside the glass window in back and heard the whole thing! Tried peering in between the cracks in the blinds, but it was so packed, hot & sweaty in there that the windows fogged up, ha ha! ziggy Stardust made my night!!!
  1:18pm bnowb:

Great show Joe. I've been in a Replacement studio in Clifton; love them!
  1:20pm Laura:

I thought they trashed their dressing room after that SNL show too....
Avatar 1:20pm Joe B:

they did!
Avatar 1:22pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Man, these cuts sound great.
  1:22pm listener monica:

i was not a fan of the replacements albums. but now i know what i was missing.
Avatar 1:23pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Though I was hoping they completed "Fox On The Run".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24pm joe:

Paul was probably too hopped up on slowed cooked City Gardens hot dogs to play those tracks
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Stevel:

Their slow, country & western version of Goddamn Job was a maddening live favorite of mine.
  1:25pm Eric Speck:

This is great. My favorite band. Thank you for hosting Bob Mehr, Joe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm joe:

Was that done so that if it has been released that those that came in by way of TIM would have access to some of hte older stuff
  1:30pm mary:

Irving Plaza fantastic show and the afterparty. whoa. Paul sitting on the interior steps of the afterparty building kinda wasted and very beautiful. Very beautiful
  1:34pm Laura:

What year at the Michigan Theatre (Ann Arbor)...1986, 1987?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Stevel:

The space at Maxwell's (thanks, joe) is reminiscent of Merlyns, In Madison, WI. Tight, sweaty and amazing.
  1:43pm Bluesman:

Joe - i'd be a liar if I was to say I was a huge Replacements fan. That said, this is a fantastic interview!
  1:44pm SeanG:

breakdown!
  1:44pm John in Bklyn:

That was great, Bob and Joe. Thanks!
  1:45pm John in Bklyn:

I saw Petty in Jersey (Brendan Byrne Arena?) in '85 but 'Til Tuesday opened.
  1:49pm Dean:

Saw Petty in Santa Monica late '70s, but I don't think it was the NYE show of '78...or was it?

Missed Petty at the Whisky around the time of the first album. Walked right past, declined to go.
Avatar 1:51pm northguineahills:

Just moved to Petty's hometown. Heard many people of all ages break out into Petty songs this weekend.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Hughie Considine:

oh, yeah, When the Time Comes -- one of those stealth Petty gems.
Avatar 1:53pm SmokinJ:

Tom was an American original..
  1:53pm Chris M. Junior:

Hey Joe, if you're continuing with the Petty theme, how about "Magnolia" from the second album?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:53pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Another great one, Joe ( and Bob). Didn't think about the juxtaposition with Petty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Michael 98145:

Good golly --
  1:55pm Dean:

When I think Petty I also think Dwight Twilley, label mates at the outset. Leon Russell was one smart guy. He also released Larry Hosford's first two albums. RIP, LH.
  1:56pm Cooh John:

There is a live version of Breakdown where the audience sings the chorus to Tom and he has a classic comeback: "You're gonna put me out of a job,"
Avatar 1:58pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

REally enjoying Joe!!!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Hughie Considine:

Tom's mastery of in-concert call-and-response was one of the reasons the Mats were so negative -- they just wouldn't do it, but at the same time, they realized, Paul did anyway, that writing a song where 20,000 people sing along in unison is actually a goal to be pursued and was out of their reach.
Avatar 1:58pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

Great tribute
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm DonJuanTijuana:

Hey @JoeB just joined.....gonna have to go back into the archive to catch the early part of this great show!
Avatar 2:03pm northguineahills:

It took my old age to finally to really appreciate Tom Petty.
  2:03pm Eric Hat:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm doctorjazz:

Liking this Petty set (and I never really cared or paid much attention to him either)
  2:05pm mary:

do not get Tom Petty & H. Sorta blech. Esp if one loves Mats.
But I'm listening today to try
  2:06pm Chris M. Junior:

Thanks, Joe, for "Magnolia."
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Nate K.:

I always thought the Petty cover of "Something in the Air" was so spot on. It's like the song was written just for him: tempo, vocal register, delivery, melody, etc.
Avatar 2:06pm Sissophonic Cheryl:

"Magnolia" always one of my faves. Love the Twilley backing vocals.
Avatar 2:06pm Joe B:

i agree nate, also a cool version on the petty live box
  2:07pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Sigh
  2:07pm mary:

no, I have to take a break from show during the Petty.
But thanks for all your great shows, Joe!!!

  2:11pm SeanG:

thanks Joe
  2:12pm SeanG:

if i remember those recent mudcrutch records were pretty damn good too
  2:16pm John in Bklyn:

Yeah, Joe! In this set and in the past week I heard so many Petty tunes that I had forgotten about and new tunes I hadn't heard. He was one of the R-n-R greats.
  2:18pm SeanG:

recently just started getting into dwight twilley. he's the best!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Nate K.:

I didn't really know about the Petty/Seymour/Twilley connection. So cool. Makes perfect sense, too.
Avatar 2:24pm glenn:

tom petty forgot more great songs than most people ever wrote.
  2:25pm Lane in Chicago:

Wow, that Seymour cover ("Surrender") was sweet. Reminds me of one of my favourite descriptions, "Shelter-era Tom Petty."
  2:27pm Dennis Diken:

real nice show Joe!
Avatar 2:28pm Joe B:

dennis i know you will really dig the next 2 tunes coming up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Dominick:

Solid show Joe
  2:29pm John in Bklyn:

Wow, I haven't heard this tune in yeeeurs!
I seem to remember a cheezy MTV video.
  2:29pm Dungaroos Kipawah:

Jeez I haven't heard "Girls" since it was a quasi-hit. This takes me back

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Nate K.:

Wow, Del Shannon, another Petty collab that I didn't know about. Good stuff.
  2:32pm Dennis Diken:

oh yeah! boy, I miss Del. anyone out there see his '82 Bottom Line date when he was promoting "Drop Down And Get Me"? one of the best shows ever! on par with Freddy Cannon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Michael 98145:

Heh: www.youtube.com... girls!
  2:33pm John in Bklyn:

One thing all these tunes have in common: the snare sounds like it was wrapped with an entire roll of duct tape!
Avatar 2:34pm glenn:

ooh. this out of time is fabulous.
Avatar 2:35pm Joe B:

good point john!
  2:35pm John in Bklyn:

I always wondered why studio greats didn't get endorsement deals from Scotchâ„¢ Brand.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Nate K.:

This is so great, Joe. One of my fave Stones songs, too.
  2:36pm John in Bklyn:

Hi, Jim Keltner here, when you need a fat drum sound for a million seller head on over to your local ACE Hardware Store...
Avatar 2:36pm glenn:

and i don't get why they don't call it gaffer's tape. it's useless for wrapping ducts.
  2:41pm John in Bklyn:

That was nice. Maundy was kinda Monkee.
